Master Josef Newgarden (2017)

The 2019 NTT IndyCar Series was the 24th season of the American IndyCar Series and the 108th season in American monoposto racing. It was held over 17 races from March 10th to September 22nd. Josef Newgarden became a master for the second time. Honda won the manufacturers' championship . Felix Rosenqvist was named Rookie of the Year .

Racing calendar

The IndyCar Series racing calendar includes 17 races on 16 racetracks. Compared to last year, the Phoenix Grand Prix at the Phoenix International Raceway and the Grand Prix of Sonoma at the Sonoma Raceway have been replaced by the IndyCar Classic at the Circuit of The Americas and the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca .

The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in the Streets of St. Petersburg , Saint Petersburg , Florida , United States took place on March 10, 2019 and covered a distance of 110 laps of 2.897 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 318.650 km.

Will Power stayed in the lead until the first caution. It was triggered by Ryan Hunter-Reay, who had an engine failure on lap 20 on the start-finish straight. When restarting, Felix Rosenqvist passed Power. On lap 26, Ed Jones hit the concrete wall at turn 9. Matheus Leist collided with the Jones' vehicle and also retired. Jones broke a metacarpal bone in the accident. On lap 51, Will Power took the lead back from Rosenqvist after stopping one lap ahead of Rosenqvist. But because he was stuck behind slower vehicles, Josef Newgarden took the lead on lap 55. Newgarden won the race ahead of Scott Dixon and Will Power.

Colton Herta was the youngest IndyCar winner

The INDYCAR Classic at the Circuit of The Americas , Austin , Texas , United States took place on March 24, 2019 and covered a distance of 60 laps of 5.488 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 329.272 km.

This was the first IndyCar race on this track. In contrast to the Formula 1 races, driving through the run-off zones was not penalized. Especially in the penultimate corner, the drivers let themselves be carried several meters from the actual race track. Will Power , Alexander Rossi and rookie Colton Herta pulled away from the rest of the field at the start of the race. With 15 laps to go, Herta was the first of the leaders to stop. Due to a collision between Felix Rosenqvist and James Hinchcliffe , there was a pace car phase before Power and Rossi pitted. As a result, Rossi lost some position and Power could no longer leave the pit lane due to a technical defect. Colton Herta won the race ahead of Josef Newgarden and Ryan Hunter-Reay . With his win, Herta became the youngest IndyCar winner. When he won, he was 18 years, 11 months and 25 days old and replaced Graham Rahal .

The Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach at the Long Beach Grand Prix Circuit , Long Beach , California , United States took place on April 14, 2019 and covered a distance of 85 laps of 3.167 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 269.211 km.

The only yellow phase came on lap 1. Spencer Pigot drove into the rear of Zach Veach and stopped in the middle of the track. The underlying Jack Harvey and Marcus Ericsson also stopped on the track. As in the previous year, Alexander Rossi dominated the race and led 80 of 85 laps. Using a different pit strategy, Josef Newgarden and Will Power were able to get past Scott Dixon, who had been second up until then . While trying to defend his place against Dixon, Power braked and had to turn in the emergency exit of the first corner. Due to problems with the filler neck, Dixon dropped to fifth place after his last pit stop. He was able to regain fourth place from Ryan Hunter-Reay on the racetrack. At Graham Rahal but Dixon could not pass in the last round. Because Rahal defended too aggressively, he was given a time penalty and counted behind Dixon. Alexander Rossi won the race ahead of Josef Newgarden and Scott Dixon.

The INDYCAR Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway , Speedway , Indiana , United States took place on May 11, 2019 and covered a distance of 85 laps of 3.925 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 333.641 km.

Patricio O'Ward accelerated too early and damaged Alexander Rossi's right rear tire before they even crossed the start-finish line. On lap 10, Marcus Ericsson turned into the wall in the last corner and triggered a yellow phase. At the restart, Scott Dixon overtook the leaders Felix Rosenqvist and Jack Harvey . Colton Herta and Ryan Hunter-Reay spun independently on the first corner. After the yellow phase that followed, Ed Jones took second place. During Rosenqvist's pit stop on lap 43, his car caught fire, but it went out by itself when he drove off. On lap 55 the first drivers switched to rain tires and the track stayed wet until the end of the race. Because Helio Castroneves got stuck in the gravel trap on lap 59 after a spin, there was another yellow phase. At the stop, Rosenqvist's car caught fire again and he was able to continue as before. Because Josef Newgarden's pit crew rolled away a tire, he lost a few places and also had to serve a penalty. With the restart with 17 laps to go, Dixon, Harvey and Spencer Pigot were in the first three places. Simon Pagenaud was still in sixth place. Six laps before the end of the race, he overtook second-placed Harvey, who was five seconds behind Dixon. in the penultimate lap he was up to Dixon and was able to take the lead due to a small mistake by Dixon. Despite a 15th place Newgarden remained with six points ahead of Dixon leaders.

The 103rd Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway , Speedway , Indiana , United States took place on May 26, 2019 and covered a distance of 200 laps of 4.023 km, which corresponds to a total distance of 804.672 km.

36 vehicles were registered for the race. Fernando Alonso was unable to qualify for the race. Simon Pagenaud started from first place and kept him in the first laps. On lap six, Herta dropped out for the third time in a row with transmission problems. On lap 178, the vehicles of Sébastien Bourdais and Graham Rahal touched at turn 3 and hit the boundary wall. The following three vehicles also failed. Pagenaud took the lead past Alexander Rossi when he restarted on lap 187 before the first corner . At the same point Rossi took the lead again on lap 198. Before turn three on lap 199, Pagenaud took the lead again and held it until the end. He won the race ahead of Rossi and Takuma Sato . It was Pagenaud's first win at the Indy 500. He also took the overall lead in the drivers' championship from Josef Newgarden.

The first race of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix at the Raceway at Belle Isle , Detroit , Michigan , United States took place on June 1, 2019 and covered a distance of 43 laps of 3.78 km each, which corresponds to a total distance of 162.624 km.

The start was postponed by more than an hour due to a storm. Instead of the planned 70 laps, a 75-minute race was driven. After one lap behind the pace car, the race was released on the wet track. Because Matheus Leist had turned it was sent out again. After 24 minutes Marco Andretti was the first to switch to slicks. During his pit stop in a yellow phase 40 minutes before the end of the race, Will Power was sent off even though the right front wheel was not yet mounted. He drove back to the pit on three wheels and received a drive-through penalty for it. 30 minutes before the end of the race, Dixon retired due to a driving error. Josef Newgarden won the race ahead of Alexander Rossi and Takuma Satō . With his victory, Newgarden took the lead again in the drivers' championship.

On the first lap, several vehicles collided in turn three. Patricio O'Ward , Simon Pagenaud and Tony Kanaan stopped on the track. At the restart on lap 8, Scott Dixon led ahead of Spencer Pigot and Santino Ferrucci . On lap 15 there was the next caution phase after a collision between Pigot and Bourdais. On lap 33, Newgarden and Rossi tried to overtake James Hinchcliffe, who had just come out of the pits, at Turn 3. Both turned and Rossi pushed Hinchcliffe's car into Newgarden's. Rossi was able to continue immediately and Hinchcliffe with the help of the marshals. For Newgarden, however, the race was over. On the seventh last lap, Rosenqvist touched a stack of tires with his left rear wheel and hit the boundary wall a little later at turn 1. The race was then interrupted and released three laps before the end. Dixon won the race ahead of Marcus Ericsson and Will Power .

Pole sitter Takuma Sato was in the lead until his first stop on lap 61 . As he pitted, he met one of his pit people as he drove over his pit. He lost two laps as a result. When Scott Dixon left the pits on lap 76, he was overtaken by Ryan Hunter-Reay , who took first place. Zach Veach hit the wall at Turn 2 on lap 135 and tries to keep control of his vehicle despite a crooked rear wheel. He came to a stop in turn 3 and there was a yellow phase. After Hinchcliffe touched the wall 29 laps before the end, there was the second yellow phase. At the restart, the leading Josef Newgarden was briefly overtaken by Dixon but was able to prevail in the first corner. After Colton Herta had overtaken Alexander Rossi on the outside in corners 1 and 2 on lap 228 , he collided with Dixon trying to overtake him. Rossi was only just able to evade both of them and almost lost control of his vehicle. On lap 242 Rossi passed Newgarden just outside Turn 1 but then had to pull back because there was not enough grip in the high lane. Newgarden won the race ahead of Rossi and Graham Rahal .

Before the race, Robert Wickens , who sustained a spinal cord injury while racing at the Pocono Raceway last year , drove a demo lap in an Acura NSX that had been redesigned for hand control. Because qualifying was canceled due to rain, the starting grid was determined according to vehicle points. So table leader Josef Newgarden started ahead of Alexander Rossi . On the first lap between turns 1 and 2, Takuma Sato , Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay collided with each other. Two other drivers were involved in the accident. Therefore the race was interrupted for an hour. The teams of Rossi, Hunter-Reay and Hinchcliffe used the break to repair the car even though it was forbidden. You were deducted ten rounds for each. Will Power drove into the wall on his first lap after his first pit stop and retired. In the yellow phase that followed, a defective cooler forced Scott Dixon into the pits for 60 laps. After the next pit stops, the two Dale Coyne drivers Ferrucci and Sébastien Bourdais were in the lead.
