The Gateway Motorsports Park , formerly Gateway International Raceway is a racetrack at Madison in the US state of Illinois . NASCAR Nationwide Series and Craftsman Truck Series races are held on the 1.25 mile oval . Gateway International Raceway also includes a quarter mile drag racing track for the National Hot Rod Association .

The first major event on the property was a race of the Champ Car series on Saturday, May 24, 1997 one day before the Indianapolis 500 of the Indy Racing League . This should avoid a direct conflict like the year before with the competitive US 500 race . After a few years, the circuit's management became increasingly dissatisfied with its use, especially as motorsport fans decided to visit the Indianapolis 500. So in 2000 the race was moved to autumn. A year later it was removed from the Champ Car series calendar and became an Indy Racing League race. After mediocre acceptance, this race was also canceled after 2003.

Dover Motorsports owned the track until 2010. After being closed for two years, the track reopened in 2012 and renamed Gateway Motorsports Park.

Although the route is relatively short according to modern NASCAR standards, this is not compensated for by excessive bends. Rather, the route is unique, as the elevations in the curves are different and the curves themselves also have different radii.

In the infield there is an additional street course that is used by sports car and motorcycle clubs during the summer months. In 1995, a race of the AMA Superbike Championship was held on this course, which was won by the Canadian Miguel Duhamel.

In the recent past, the Gateway International Raceway has been associated with the Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series several times . There is often the opinion among the general public that the route must first be expanded for this, as the capacity is limited to only 60,000 seats.

In 2017 the Indy Car Series returned to the track.
