The Caesars Palace Grand Prix Circuit was a 3.65-kilometer street circuit in Las Vegas in the US state of Nevada , on which the Las Vegas Grand Prix as part of the Formula 1 World Championship and races for the Indy Car Series were held. The course was located in the parking lot of the hotel and casino Caesars Palace .
history
After the US GP of Formula 1 in 1980 due to safety considerations for the last time on the traditional track of Watkins Glen had taken place, those responsible were looking for alternatives in the US. In their search, they met representatives from the city of Las Vegas , who wanted to polish up the mafia image of the gambler's paradise that had sprouted in the 1970s and were looking for an internationally recognized event. Formula 1, with its European influence, came in handy. As a result, a Grand Prix-compatible course was created on the parking lot of the Caesars Palace , one of the most famous and largest hotels in the city at the time.
The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Las Vegas took place twice (1981/82), and the Indy Car Series held court here in 1983 and 1984. Overall, such an event in the desert metropolis had no future because the number of spectators was limited and the drivers and teams complained about the bumpy slope, the desert sand and the sometimes enormous heat.
The conditions before the first race were not bad: the 1981 F1 GP was the last race of the season and the world championship had not yet been decided. The Argentine Carlos Reutemann traveled one point ahead of the Brazilian Nelson Piquet , both of whom had never been world champions before. After Reutemann had qualified for first place on the grid, the matter seemed pretty clear. But in the race he delivered an inexplicably weak performance and was even overtaken by the eventual winner, his teammate Alan Jones . Piquet, on the other hand, secured the world title with a fifth place and two points. Even in 1982 the world championship was not yet decided when the F1 convoy traveled to Nevada. However, the Finn Keke Rosberg was also a fifth place to prevail against the Northern Irishman John Watson .
In the two following years, the race in the IndyCar series continued, whereby the two infield passages were removed from the route and the route only consisted of a sequence of left bends and straight lines. In 1983 this race was won by US racing legend Mario Andretti , in 1984 Tom Sneva was the last winner on the list of winners at the Caesars Palace Grand Prix Circuit. Since the Las Vegas Motor Speedway has been a permanent racetrack in Las Vegas since 1996 , most of the races are held there today.
