The Hinterstoisser Air Base ( ICAO : LOXZ ) in Zeltweg ( Styria ) is the largest military airfield of the Austrian Armed Forces . There is also the non-directional radio beacon with the callsign ZW for flight navigation .
history
The airbase was established in 1937 after the preparation of the air forces erected. He was selected next to Aigen im Ennstal because he is under the protection of the Alps.
According to plans that had begun in 1935, four aircraft hangars, four crew buildings as well as service and security buildings were built in addition to an unpaved airstrip for flight school operations . Regular flight operations began at the end of January 1938.
When Austria was annexed , all military airfields were occupied immediately. The Air Force of the Army extended the Zeltweg Air Base and taught there one a pilot school. The school was later divided, with one part being relocated to Klagenfurt , while the other part completed its daily practice flights in the Parndorf area in Burgenland. In 1942 taxiways and a runway were concreted .
In 1943 the school squadron became an alarm squadron , which was mainly used against partisans in Slovenia . The Allied attacks began in 1944, but did not cause any significant damage to the airport despite 15 air raids. Towards the end of the Second World War , the airfield was intended as an operational airfield as part of the Alpine fortress . Advancing Soviet troops occupied it. It was later turned over to British troops . During the time of occupation , the area was not used by the Royal Air Force , but only maintained as a demand airfield.
After the State Treaty of 1955, the square was handed over to the Republic of Austria. At first only used by the infantry , it was returned to the air force in 1956 .
In 1967 it was named Fliegerhorst Hinterstoisser-Zeltweg after the Austrian aviation pioneer Franz Hinterstoisser . In 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2016 and 2019 international flight days took place in Zeltweg under the name AirPower . In 2007, the first Eurofighter of the Austrian Armed Forces landed at Zeltweg Air Base. In future, the Hinterstoisser air base is to become the only base for the Eurofighters of the Austrian Armed Forces. For this purpose, the entire site has been rebuilt and renovated since 2003. This should cost 47 million euros; In 2010, the Court of Auditors put the costs at 161 million euros.
Among other things, the aircraft yard, a relay building, a training building and the tower were newly built. In addition, the runway was renovated, a safety net system was installed and twelve deployment boxes were built for the Eurofighter Typhoon.
