Franz Hinterstoisser (* 28. April 1863 in Aigen (Salzburg) ; † 6. March 1933 in Vienna ) was an officer of the Imperial Army , military writer and pioneer of Austrian aviation .

Career

He received his military training at the Pioneer Cadet School in Hainburg an der Donau in Lower Austria . In the first "military aeronautical course" held by civilian Viktor Silberer and lasted from April 14, 1890 to August 5, 1890 in the Vienna Prater, he learned how to balloon together with seven other fellow officers.

With Viktor Silberer he founded the Vienna Aero Club in 1901 , which later became the Austrian Aero Club . Together with Lieutenant Josef Trieb, he held the first purely military balloon pilot course at the Arsenal in Vienna as the first location of the Military Aeronautical Institute from August 20, 1893. It was not until 1907 that he himself passed the balloon pilot's exam and, in 1908, that for steering balloons.

Around 1908, Franz Hinterstoisser, in his functions as Vice President of the Austrian Aero Club and as the commander of the Austro-Hungarian Military Aeronautical Institute, campaigned for the acquisition of airships and was successful after Commercial Councilor Camillo Castiglioni and General Director engineer Alexander Cassinone (both also Vice Presidents of the Aero Club) had submitted financial offers that were finally accepted by the army administration.

With the municipal council resolution of June 11, 1909 to create the first Austrian airfield, Wiener Neustadt followed a joint suggestion by Viktor Silberer and Franz Hinterstoisser.

Franz Hinterstoisser was married to Josefine Hinterstoisser , who had also been a balloon pilot since May 15, 1911. His brother Hermann Joseph Hinterstoisser was originally a military doctor in Vienna, but resigned from military service in 1892 and was, among other things, a member of the Supreme Medical Council in Vienna. His grave is in the Döblinger Friedhof (group 6, no. 5).

Services

  • Between 1898 and 1903 and again from 1907 to 1912 he was in command of the Military Aeronautical Institute.
  • On March 7, 1901, Franz Hinterstoisser and Viktor Silberer co-founded the Vienna Aero Club, which later became the Austrian Aero Club, of which he was 1st Vice President and honorary member.
  • Josefine Hinterstoisser became the first Austrian female air pilot in the summer of 1911 with a one-and-a-quarter hour solo trip on the Radetzky balloon from Vienna's Prater to Rauchwarth .

Awards

In 1931 he received the Golden Sports Medal from the Austrian Aero Club for over 150 balloon trips.

Appreciation

In 1967, the Hinterstoisser Air Base in Zeltweg ( Styria ) was named after him, who landed nearby in his balloon in 1902 after crossing the Alps for the first time.
