Johann Christian Sulzberger was the son of the chamber consultant and court advocate Johann Andreas Sulzberger. Before studying medicine in Berlin and Leipzig , he attended high school in Coburg . After his successful studies, he obtained his doctorate in Rostock in November 1756 ("De Myopia et Presbyopia" - dt. "About myopia and farsightedness") and then established himself as a general practitioner in Salzungen . In 1773 he was promoted to ducal rural and urban physicist .

He worked with great dedication on the development of home remedies to improve public health . The result of his work was an effective remedy for gastrointestinal disorders, Dr. Sulzberger's general river tincture , which is also called Sulzberger or Salzunger Drops . With the emigration of many Salzung citizens to America in 1847, these healing drops also became known on the new continent. These drops were part of many families' medicine cabinets until after the Second World War .

Since Sulzberger was very wealthy through his shares in the salt works, among other things, he stipulated in his will that the proceeds from the sale of the medicine should only be used for charitable purposes. It was also decided to set up a poor and sick foundation after the death of Sulzberger's wife. Johann Christian Sulzberger died on October 6, 1803. As early as 1808, the Sulzberger Poor and Sick Foundation was brought into being by Ms. Sulzberger. After her death in 1842 an equal administration took over the foundation affairs. On the day Sulzberger died in 1851, the new Salzung hospital was inaugurated and given his name. Several extensions and a kindergarten on the hospital grounds were financed through the foundation until 1926. In honor of the couple, Sulzbergerstrasse, in which the Sulzbergers' house stood, the local state grammar school and Sophienstrasse bear their names.
