Incorporations

In 1874 the cadastral communities of Zeltweg and Farrach were separated from the community of Fohnsdorf and merged into the newly created community of Zeltweg. The first mayor was Heinrich Dillinger.

history

The earliest written document is from 1149 and is "Celcuic". The name goes back to the Slavic personal name Sedlъkъ . There were already some farms in today's Zeltweg in the 13th century. In the 15th century, however, people had to contend with famine, bad harvests and incurable diseases. From 1569 Archduke Karl II let operate the Mur rafting, which played a very important role in the history of Zeltweg. In the following decades, Zeltweg grew and immigration began.

In the 18th century, the population fell sharply again due to the expansion of the traffic routes. In 1848, Count Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck , who came from Silesia, decided to build a steelworks in the area. This industrial revolution also brought a great boost for Zeltweg. In 1868 the station was opened in Zeltweg as part of the Rudolfsbahn . The station became a railway junction with the opening of the Fohnsdorf Railway in 1870 ; In 1900 the Lavant Valley Railway was added as a further route .

During the Second World War , many forced laborers from France, Italy ( IMIs ), the Soviet Union, Poland and other nations worked in the " Hermann Göring Works ", as the UAE ( VOEST-Alpine Railway Technology ) was called at the time. As a leisure activity they went swimming on the Mur. The Italians were treated as badly as the Russians. In the years 1944 and 1945, Zeltweg was bombed several times by British and American bombers, which was probably due to the war-important industry and the railway junction. At the end of the war, Zeltweg was occupied first by the Russians and then by the British.

After the Second World War, there was an upswing in the educational and industrial sectors in Zeltweg.

The first Austrian Grand Prix took place at the Zeltweg-Hinterstoisser Air Base in 1963 , but it did not have world championship status. Only in 1964 was the race in Zeltweg part of the automobile world championship .

On January 1, 1966, Zeltweg was elevated to the state. The state parliament member Josef Schlager presented the matter to the state parliament in December 1965. The town survey festival took place on September 18, 1966 with Federal President Franz Jonas and Governor Josef Krainer senior .

On November 4, 2015, the former mayor Kurt Haller (SPÖ) was sentenced to four and a half years, a former city council director and a city councilor to several months in prison. Overall, these are said to have caused damage of more than 1.5 million euros, the allegations were of infidelity, fraud and abuse of office.

Farrach Castle : From 1670 to 1680, Farrach Castle was built by Carl Friedrich von Teufenbach in the style of an Italian Renaissance castle. The interior of the castle was stuccoed . Since 1986 the castle has been owned by Anton and Ingrid Hartleb, who restored the castle and turned it into an event center for art and culture. The castle also houses the castle tavern, a two-toque restaurant.

Regular events

" AirPower " takes place every three years at the Hinterstoisser air base . This air show is one of the largest of its kind in Europe and attracts more than 200,000 visitors in two days.

The center of Zeltweg was heavily burdened by truck traffic, because most of the traffic coming from the Wolfsberg and Obdach area (including round wood, wood chips and general cargo transports) had to be routed through the local area. For this reason, a bypass was opened on November 3, 2004. It is 4.5 km long, cost 11 million euros and also relieves Judenburg and Fisching.

Zeltweg station is located on the Rudolfsbahn and is the start of the Fohnsdorfer Bahn and the Lavanttalbahn . The most important branch of the economy is industry (mechanical engineering, packaging industry, wood industry).

Together with Lobmingtal, Kobenz, Seckau, Spielberg, St. Marein-Feistritz and Gaal, the community forms the tourism association “Tourismus am Spielberg”. Its seat is in Spielberg.

The largest military airfield in Austria ( Hinterstoisser Air Base ), which was built in 1937, is located in Zeltweg .
