Since the middle of the 12th century, the members of the clan have always named themselves after one of the fortifications they owned, but mostly after their ancestral seat. The first knights who called themselves "von Lobming" were named in May 1149 in Friesach . The Knights of Lobming were at home in the Altlobming Castle (today Sulzbachgraben). There are numerous legends and stories about the Knights of Lobming, who held a predominant position until the first half of the 15th century.

After the Knights of Lobming died out, King Friedrich II handed over the rule of Großlobming to Wolfgang Zach. After that, the Knights of Praunfalk owned Großlobming Castle for a while. On September 14, 1730, the Großlobming rule was sold to Count Siegmund Welfersheim. The next resale on April 23, 1755 to Spital am Pyhrn Abbey , which the estate immediately sold to Count Franz Josef Wurmbrand.

In 1827 the industrialist Josef Seßler bought the Großlobming estate from the Wurmbrand bankruptcy estate. On September 1, 1866, Viktor Seßler received the nobility and knighthood. Through his marriage to Helen Freiin von Herzinger, the barony passed to him and from then on Viktor wrote to himself Sessler-Herzinger. D. and Hans Maria Carl Alfons Gustav, Freiherr v. Wimpffen Gut and Großlobming Castle.

The castle, owned by the Wimpffen family, was sold to the Styrian state government in 1979 for the purpose of setting up an agricultural college.
