Helga Pohl
Helga Pohl (* 30th April 1921 in Vienna , Austria , † 31 May 1963 in the Aegean Sea at Paleo Trikeri , Greece ) was an Austrian and a writer who especially youth books, but also wrote novels. In 1958 she won the Vienna Youth Book Prize .
Life
Helga Pohl was born on April 30, 1921 in Vienna, but lived with her husband, the then director of Alpine Stahl AG , in Zeltweg in Styria .
The author mainly wrote books for young people , including The Forgotten House (1953), Flip flies through Paris (1955), Tonio and his donkey (1955), The Happy Ship (1955), Adventure in Zurich (1956), The Elephant of Amsterdam ( 1958), Circus in the small city (1958) or Unter dem Himmel von Wien (1959), but also novels such as When your shadow measures 16 feet, Berenike (1955). In 1958 she won the Vienna Youth Book Prize .
During a vacation in Greece in 1963, the then 42-year-old was killed in a shark attack . Pohl, who had already been on vacation with her husband and daughter the year before, came here alone this time. After a ship with numerous German tourists, including a friend of Pohl's, had docked on the day of her death, she was on May 31, 1963 with her German friend, a woman named Wilkens, on a beach at Paleo Trikeri on the Pagasitic Gulf , when she was Around 4:30 p.m. Pohl decided to swim in the sea. After she swam mostly about 15 meters from the shore, she was attacked by a shark in waist-high water while swimming back to the beach, about three meters from the rescue shore , torn to pieces and dragged into the open sea. Her body or remains of it were never found. According to Greek newspaper reports, the shark is likely to have been a great white shark about three meters long.
