Ilse Erika Korotin (born 1957 in Horn , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian philosopher and sociologist . She researched and published on the history of ideas of National Socialism . At the Institute for Science and Art in Vienna, she heads the women's research documentation center. Her work focuses on feminist biography research and the history of science .

life and work

Ilse Korotin completed an apprenticeship as a bookseller . After several years of professional activity, she studied philosophy and sociology at the University of Vienna from 1983 . In 1990 she became Dr. phil. doctorate and since then has worked at the Vienna Institute for Science and Art, since 1991 as head of the documentation center for women's studies.

Since 1998, the documentation, research and networking project biografiA has been under her leadership . biographical database and lexicon of austrian women carried out. It is devoted to the historical and biographical processing of Austrian women's personalities from the period from the first mention of Austria to the present with the aim of providing a sound basis for further research in the field of feminist historical research , the history of science as well as women's and gender research . The four-volume lexicon biographiA, edited by Korotin, was published in 2016 . Lexicon of Austrian Women . It contains around 6,500 biographies of Austrian women and references to traces of women's biographies.

As part of the project, Ilse Korotin and Brigitta Keintzel from the University of Vienna published the lexical reference work for women scientists in and from Austria in 2002 . Life - work - work out. It includes the life stories of 342 women working in science from all areas of the cultural and natural sciences from the turn of the century to the post-war period, including several women scientists who were murdered in German concentration camps. The lexicon also shows “that until well into the second half of the 20th century, only very few women succeeded in the institutionalized scientific business. Habilitations and appointments to professorships remained exceptions ”. The large number of biographies speak for a broad emancipation movement, write the editors in the foreword and call for a "fundamental revision of the previous perspective on the history of Austrian science".

Award

In 2017 Korotin was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Popular Education .
