The Aichfeld , also Aichfeld – Murboden , Judenburg – Knittelfelder basin or Fohnsdorfer basin (and the like) is an extensive basin in the Upper Styrian Mur Valley , in the area of Judenburg , Fohnsdorf , Zeltweg , Spielberg and Knittelfeld .

To the subject

The geographical name Judenburg – Knittelfelder-Becken or Judenburger Becken , which is used in the specialist literature, is rarely used for the largest inner-alpine basin in Styria ; one speaks more of the Aichfeld-Murboden area . Here is Aichfeld   for the part north of the Mur, Murboden other hand, for those south of the river. Otherwise "Aichfeld" is anchored in the vocabulary for the whole pool. Fohnsdorf basin is a term derived from geology, there is also Fohnsdorf-Knittelfelder tertiary basin and the like.

geography

The basin, about 22 kilometers long and up to 5 kilometers wide, is located on the uppermost Mur , which, coming from the Lungau in Salzburg through a narrow valley, enters a wide flood plain near Judenburg . At Knittelfeld , the Seckau basin connects to the northwest , then the valley narrows again, but not as much, only from the Murknie at Bruck does the Murtal become gorge-like again ( Mur breakthrough valley ). So it lies in the valley of the Upper Mur Valley . The Pölstal flows from the northwest and the Obdacher Sattel valley from the south .

In the north, the basin is bounded by the eastern end of the Murberge ( Hölzlberg  1589  m above sea level ) and the Gaal mountain range (both Niedere Tauern ), in the south by the foothills of the Zirbitzkogel  ( 2396  m above sea level , Seetal Alps ) and Ameringkogels  ( 2187  m above sea level , Stubalpe ), and the western Gleinalpe ( Speikkogel  1988  m above sea level ).

The basin comprises the major part of the settlement area classified by Statistics Austria as the Knittelfeld urban region .

geology

From a geological point of view, the term only includes parts of the basin that belongs to the series of the Noric Depression . The basin filling consists mainly of fluvio-glacial sediments , which build up extensive terrace corridors, but also of tertiary loose material with a Riedel relief on the edge . Due to their high relief energy, large parts of this tertiary of the region are assigned to the Styrian Randgebirge , especially the areas around the lower Feistritz , Lobming and Gleinbach .

The basin is economically important because of its several coal seams .

The habitat

Aichfeld is home to the communities of Judenburg , Fohnsdorf , Zeltweg , Spielberg and Knittelfeld , which together form an Alpine conurbation with around 50,000 inhabitants. In the catchment area there are also some small, more rural communities, so that around 80,000 people are at home in Aichfeld. Lately there has been closer cooperation between the municipalities, as they are economically dependent on one another. In 1996, for example, a joint public transport system was created with the Aichfeld regional bus ; the Arena am Waldfeld in Fohnsdorf, the largest shopping center in Styria outside of the Graz area, also attracts visitors from other regions.

The Aichfeld is also important as the location of Zeltweg Airport , one of the most important Austrian military bases.

In addition to the German-speaking cities of Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich, the Aichfeld region has also been part of the Second Life virtual world since 2010 . Here the 3D Internet is mainly used as a communication platform ( social interaction , meeting and e-learning ).

Proposal as a district name

Before the Styrian municipal structural reform took effect in 2015, the Styrian districts of Judenburg and Knittelfeld were merged to form the Murtal district in 2012 . "Aichfeld" was previously suggested for the district name, but not selected.
