The Ameringkogel ( 2187 m above sea level ) is the highest mountain in the Packalpe , the highest mountain range in the Lavanttal Alps east of the Lavant .
The border between the Styrian communities Obdach and Weißkirchen in Styria runs over the Ameringkogel . The Amering massif rises over 1500 m above the Aichfeld and has a distinctive, moderately steep meadow ridge that runs in a north-south direction. To the northwest is the summit of the Großenberg ( Großering ) ( 2152 m ), to the southeast the Packalpen ridge continues to the Hofalmkogel ( 2040 m ) and Speikkogel ( 1993 m above sea level ). The Ameringkogel has a high degree of independence , as it is only connected to the higher Seetal Alps ( Zirbitzkogel , 2396 m ) by the Obdacher Sattel ( 955 m ) to the west . Geologically, the mountain is mainly composed of orthogneiss .
The shortest ascent route leads from the Hirschegger Sattel ( 1543 m ) in 2½ to 3 hours over the Speikkogel and Hofalmkogel to the summit of the Ameringkogel. In good conditions, this mountain hike through extensive alpine pastures does not present any difficulties.
