Pack and Stubalpe (also Stub and Packalpe , or Packalpe or Stubalpe ) are a mountain area in Styria and Carinthia ( Austria ) that belongs to the Lavanttal Alps and the Styrian Rand Mountains . The highest peak is the Ameringkogel at 2187 m above sea level. A.
About the concept, location and landscape, delimitation and structure
Pack and Stubalpe are that part of the Styrian Randgebirge in which the direction of strike changes from west-east to north-south. They also mark the corresponding pivotal point within the concept of the Lavanttal Alps: Here a branch of the crystalline central Alps branches off from the main strike direction to the east to the Semmering and runs southeast into the Bacher Mountains and the Slovenian-Croatian end of the Alps. These two arms encompass the Styrian Basin , hence the term "Randgebirge". For Carinthia, the south branch with the Koralpe forms the barrier that delimits the Carinthian Basin , the largest inner-Alpine basin, to the east.
This section of the division is a mountain range of low mountain range character with gentle shapes and lies between the upper Lavant valley in the east, the Mur valley in the north and the Styrian hill country in the southeast.
Pack and Stubalpe are orographically relatively clear in the west and are generally bounded by the Obdacher saddle to the Seetal Alps . In the north they reach as far as the Aichfeld near Zeltweg (Judenburg – Knittelfelder- / Fohnsdorfer basin), with the Mur as the border, and the Seckauer Tauern beyond. In the east that includes Weststeirische Riedelland the Köflach-Voitsberg basin at.
Naming such as the structure of the group and delimitation within the Styrian peripheral mountains, however, are rather inconsistent. In general, one can say that the group stretches in three ridges from the Speikkogel ( 1993 m above sea level ) south, north and east, whereby the southern part tends to be called Hirschegger Alpe , the whole western part Packalpe and the eastern part Stubalpe . However, all three expressions can also be seen as a generic term. The Austrian map 1: 500,000 (ÖK500) labels the whole train from the Packsattel to the Murtal as Packalpe , the version 1: 200,000 (ÖK200) the northern part from the Peterer Alm as follows, the detailed edition 1: 50: 000 (ÖK50) Packalpe not at all. The former denotes the part east of the Hirschegger saddle with Stubalpe , the second the area east of the Peterer saddle , the tip of the Carinthian border, the latter again east of the Hirscheggersattel. Hirschegger Alm, on the other hand, is especially the ridge from the Peterer Riegel ( 1993 m above sea level ) southwards, but especially directly above Hirschegg . The Austrian Lexicon AEIOU gives Packalpe in general as the "mountain range between Koralpe in the south and Gleinalpe in the north". Otherwise, the geological literature for the north-western part also specifically mentions the Amering massif .
- In general, there is the Gaberlpass to the Gleinalpe as a limit in the northeast , and the Packsattel to the Koralm in the south .
- In the landscape structure of Styria , the Stub and Packalpe have the number R.3, the Packalpe (number R.3a), on the other hand, is seen specifically south of the Peterer Saddle, the eastern border at the Stierkreuz at the saddle house between Gaden and Knittelfeld.
- In the division of the spatial units according to Seger , which is common in Carinthia , the entire portion north of the Packsattel is called Packalpe .
- In the mountain group breakdown according to Trimmel , Kor and Packalpe (No. 2770) and Stub and Gleinalpe (No. 2780) are differentiated on both sides of the Hirscheggersattel, and are two of the subgroups of the Noric Alps . Here the entire part between Packsattel, Murtal and Hirschegger Sattel is called Hirscheggeralpe (No. 2771), while the eastern part extends to the Gleinalmsattel and breaks up into north and south roofs ( Stubalpe Nord 2785 and area between Teigitsch and Gradenbach 2781).
- The international unified orographic division of the Alps (SOIUSA / IVOEA) separates Packalpe (II / A-20.IA1) from Koralpe (20.II.A) not on the Packsattel, but on the saddle at the Steinbauer on the Hebalm , which is also the local name of the packing angle , so the Klementkogel belongs to the pack there. The Packalpe is sorted into the Northwestern Styrian Randgebirge (20.I), to the south follows the Southwestern Styrian Randgebirge (20.II).
geology
Like the Koralpe, the Pack and Stubalpe consists essentially of crystalline rock ( gneiss , mica slate ). In the Packalpe there are pegmatites that contain beryl . Tourmaline , epidote , titanite , zircon , cassiterite and spodumene are also found in these places .
summit
The main mountains are:
- Ameringkogel ( 2187 m above sea level )
- Großenberg / Großering ( 2152 m above sea level )
- Speikkogel ( 1993 m above sea level )
- Peterer Riegel ( 1967 m above sea level )
- Hirschegger Alm ( 1933 m above sea level )

tourism
The mountain range is a popular hiking area, especially in the Gaberl and Packsattel area. In addition, it also offers some small ski areas that are easily accessible, especially from the provincial capital Graz .
The area is crossed by the north-south long-distance hiking trail 05 .
