The Alte Almhaus is an inn in the municipality of Maria Lankowitz in the Austrian state of Styria . It is located on the Stubalm and, in addition to a popular tourist base, forms the center of the summer Lipizzaner pasture of the Piber stud .

Location and surroundings

The Alte Almhaus is located in a saddle between the Wölkerkogel ( 1706  m ) and the Brandkogel ( 1648  m ) in the center of the Stubalm in the cadastral community of Gößnitz . It can be reached by road from Maria Lankowitz (near Köflach ) and from Gaberl . The unpaved road from the north has been open to private traffic since the wind farm was expanded . A forest road, which is used as a trail in winter, leads to the Salzstiegelhaus ( 1543  m ) to the west . In the same direction, the Rappoldkogel, the highest peak in the Stubalpe, rises .

history

In the late 16th century, the arable land of the Lankowitz and Krems domains recorded a Hebstatt on the Stubalpe, as they were often to be found in the Styrian border mountains between Soboth and Gleinalpe . Since the area of responsibility or driving of a rulership ended at the natural limit, goods had to be moved and temporarily stored. Against this background, the saddle near the Almhaus was the most important trade crossing on the Stubalpe from Roman times until the Gaberl Straße was built . While iron and salt were transported all year round from the Oberland, wine and grain were carted across the Alm from the Unterland. The Almhaus, which has had tavern justice since the Middle Ages , was owned by the Piberstein office of the Kleinkainach lordship , which was authorized to collect a fair toll. In 1686 Johann Graf Balthasar von Wagensperg left his subjects Jacob Schmidt in Gößnitz tavern and Hebstatt ("Stuben Khüe Almb" with "well-built house next to the toll-fair owner") under the condition that the toll house and Almhaus were always to be inhabited and kept in good condition . Because the lifts were equipped with heated rooms, the mountain name Stubalpe , which is still in use today, established itself .

In February 1956 the house with veranda and attached shed was destroyed in a fire. All food supplies and furnishings were also stolen from the flames. Only the barrack- like tourist house was spared the fire. The fire damage was estimated at 300,000 to 400,000 Schillings and brought the Freewein tenant family to the brink of existence. With the help of donations, the Almhaus was able to be rebuilt and underwent numerous renovations and additions in the years and decades that followed.

Customs and Tourism

On August 12th, the feast day of Saint Hilaria, the Klara- Kirtag or Klaramarkt takes place annually on the Stubalm. Allegedly founded in the 19th century by a dairymaid named Klara, the cattle and grocer's market developed into an important event in the rural annual cycle. Today it is a popular folk festival , which, with around 150 fair stalls, represents Austria's largest Almkirtag. Many visitors combine the Kirtag with a hike, starting from St. Hemma / Edelschrott , Salzstiegel , Gaberl or Maria Lankowitz .

Until 2016, the Old Almhaus was east around the Krugmoarödenalm one of three drag lifts existing ski area . After the lifts had stood still for two winters due to a lack of snow and excessively high temperatures, the operator decided to terminate his lease. Since no buyer could be found for the lifts, they were removed. The cross-country trail between Gaberl and Salzstiegel will continue to be groomed if the snow conditions allow.

Access to the hut

The Alte Almhaus is located on the north-south long-distance hiking trail and can be reached from all sides via marked hiking trails.
