The Wölkerkogel (also Wölkartkogel ) is 1706  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Lavanttal Alps in the Austrian state of Styria . It is located on the Stubalm near the Altes Almhaus and is known for its statue of the Madonna .

Location and surroundings

The Wölkerkogel rises approximately halfway between Gaberl and Salzstiegel in the municipality of Maria Lankowitz , in the cadastral community of Gößnitz . Neighboring mountains are the Brandkogel ( 1648  m ) to the northeast, the Schwarzkogel ( 1694  m ) to the southwest and the Rappoldkogel ( 1928  m ) to the west of the Wölkerkogel. Around the summit there is a large alpine pasture area , the northern part of which is passed by the Lipizzaners in summer . The closest support points are the Alte Almhaus ( 1649  m ) immediately north of the summit and the Salzstiegelhaus ( 1543  m ) 4 km south-west.

Geology and geomorphology

Like the entire Stubalpe, the Wölkerkogel lies in the crystalline part of the Styrian peripheral mountains , which consists primarily of gneiss and mica schist , as well as marbles and metamorphic rocks of volcanic origin .

The area around the Wölkerkogel is characterized by a very complex mineralogical composition. Especially the saddle to the Schwarzkogel offers a rich facies with roughly equal proportions of quartz , orthoclase and muscovite . The summit area is located in a marble band that continues from the Hirschegger Sattel through the Styrian Fringe Mountains to Frohnleiten . Between the two large facies of Rappold mica schist and Hirschegger gneiss there are also intercalations of pegmatite , amphibolite and staurolite gneiss.

The mica-slate ovens characteristic of the Rappoldkogel do not occur on the Wölkerkogel.

history

The Wölkerkogel bears the name Pernek Kogl in the maps of the Josephinische Landesaufnahme from the late 18th century . The name Wölkartkogel was later established and is still in use today.

Madonna statue

Madonna with a small altar table: The "Wölkart-Miaz" looks to the east on western Styria.

Instead of a summit cross, a Madonna statue made of artificial sandstone is enthroned on the Wölkerkogel . The three-meter-high figure of the Virgin rests on a six-meter-high pedestal and was created by the sculptor Alfred Schlosser in the Marian year 1954 . The figure, equipped with a protective cloak, has a gilded crown on its head made by master gold and silversmith Brother Berwand from Seckau , for which a lightning rod had to be attached . One of Salla - marble sculpted altar table was replaced in 1984, renewed the embankment wall 1994th The Catholic workers' youth and the rural youth of the Voitsberg deanery under the deanery youth leader Franz Weiss , who worked a total of around 18,000 hours, played a key role in the establishment. As there was no building material, sand or water on the summit owned by the Order of Malta , the goods had to be laboriously carried up. The enormous amount of work meant that the helpers spent three months on the mountain between May and August. On August 15, 1954, the Madonna was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Leo Pietsch . In the course of a procession , around 1500 people took part in the celebrations of the Assumption . Thus the Wölkerkogel became the Marienberg of western and southern Styria.

Mass celebrations have been taking place on Father's Day on the Wölkerkogel since 1974 , organized by the Catholic Men's Association. On August 15, 2014 around 400 people celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Wölkerkogel Madonna, with a peasant choir and the Gößnitz wind group providing entertainment. There are also organized pilgrimages to the summit, especially from Weißkirchen and Maria Lankowitz. The statue is popularly known as “Wölkartmirzl” or “Wölkart-Miaz”, with “Mirzl” and “Miaz” being dialect variants of the name Maria.

Ascent

Because of its importance as a place of pilgrimage and its proximity to the Old Almhaus , the Wölkerkogel is very popular. Although there is no marked hiking trail leading to the summit, it can be easily reached in a quarter of an hour via the short grassed alpine pasture. There are some stone seats around the Madonna.
