history
Finds from the 1st to 4th centuries show a Roman settlement on the Franziskanerkogel above today's town. On the same hill are the remains of the Primaresburg , a fortification from the 10th century that was built by the Eppensteiners . The name of the place is derived from Old Slavonic ( Lancowice (pronounced: Lonkowizze) = place on the Uferaue , see also Lankwitz and Lanke (toponym) ).
The Maria Lankowitz church was first mentioned in a document in 1415. The decision of Emperor Friedrich III brought an upswing for the area around the little church . To commission Georg Gradner with the construction of the castle, monastery and church. These buildings are still today the central structures of the place (in several modifications). The castle has been a branch of the Graz-Karlau prison since the middle of the 19th century as the Maria Lankowitz prison .
In the 20th century, the history of the place is shaped by coal mining in the pits around Piberstein. Since the mining operations were shut down, efforts have been made primarily to gain a profile as a tourist community.
On January 1, 2015, the municipalities of Gößnitz and Salla were incorporated as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria .

Maria Lankowitz and Gößnitz had their own coat of arms until the end of 2014. Due to the amalgamation of municipalities, these lost their official validity on January 1st, 2015. The new municipal coat of arms was awarded by the Styrian state government with effect from July 10, 2017.
The new blazon reads:
- "In the shield that is split and divided by a silver thread at the top right in red a silver lock with a bay protruding to the right, a central dome-topped clock tower, eight black perforated windows and a round gate, at the top left in silver a miner leaning on his left knee, in the light of the Miner's lamp with a mallet in his right hand to strike the silver contoured rock growing in from the right, pulling out a silver lime tree with four leafy branches, topped with a golden statue of the Virgin Mary with the child Jesus shining brightly. "
The municipal flag has three stripes in the colors yellow-black-green with the coat of arms.
The municipal coat of arms was first awarded on March 15, 1900. The description of the coat of arms was then:
- “A shield framed in gold, half lengthwise and crosswise by a gold thread. In the upper right blue field the image of Lankowitz Castle appears on the green lawn with its bay annexes on the right, its domed clock tower and its entrance gate carved in stone, decorated with columns and elevated with stone coats of arms. In the upper left black field a miner appears in a subterranean shaft, extracting coal from the bills of his miner's lamp with a mallet and iron. In the lower silver half of the shield, a natural, leafy linden tree rises out of the green turf that rises from the edge of the foot, in whose branches the miraculous statue of Our Lady with the Infant Jesus appears in radiance, and at the foot of which rests a natural plow on the right. The shield is surrounded by an architecturally designed dark bronze border. "
