K1 Change of championship mode and renaming of the league.

The first championship in Styria was organized by the German-Alpine Football Association in the 1912/13 season and the Graz football club "Sturm" led the way ahead of Rapid Graz, Grazer Sportvereinigung, Grazer Amateur SC and German ASC Cilli. The next season they also played a championship, which was also won by Sturm. Because of the First World War it was impossible to hold a competition and it was not until 1919 that the DAFV organized the last competition, which Sturm also won.

After the DAFV was dissolved, the Styrian Football Association emerged, which continued to organize football operations from 1920. In the years 1920 to 1923 there were championships in Graz and the surrounding area or in the Styrian province, won by SK Sturm Graz, Grazer AK, German SV Leoben, or Kapfenberger SC. The first official championship was carried out in the 1923/24 season. SK Sturm Graz led the final table in front of the Grazer AK after 16 completed rounds, but then a play-off was played between the two teams in a home and return leg. The athletes won the first game 3-0, the second leg ended in a 2-2 draw. Thus the Graz AK was the first Styrian champion.

For the next fourteen years, the two clubs dominated football in Graz. SK Sturm Graz was able to celebrate the championship title in the following season and another three titles followed until the outbreak of the First World War. But the most successful was the Grazer AK, which was able to collect a total of eleven titles. Between 1929 and 1931 championships were held in the regions of Upper Styria, Central Styria and East Styria, in which the clubs Donawitzer SV, SV Guggenbach, SC Weiz and SC Liezen won.

Until the introduction of a nationwide league in the 1949/50 season , the regional league at that time was the highest possible division for Styrian football clubs. Then it was performed for one season as the second highest division below the national state league . In the 1950/51 season , the State League B was finally introduced for Central and Eastern Austrian football clubs ( Burgenland , Lower Austria , Upper Austria , Styria and Vienna ) as the second highest division and the State League , which was increased to twelve clubs, as a third class. In the 1957/58 season the league was expanded to 14 clubs. In the 1950s, the winners of the Styrian regional league were Grazer SC, SV Leoben, ASV Seegraben, WSV Eisenerz, SC Bruck / Mur (2 ×), SV Donawitz, SV Leoben and WSV Fohnsdorf.

With the ÖFB resolution on the occasion of its international conference on April 26, 1959, to introduce a 3-part regional league, football in Styria improved. On July 7th 1959 the "Regionalliga Mitte" ("RLM") was founded in Leoben, with SV Kapfenberg, SK Sturm Graz, WSV Fohnsdorf, SC Bruck / Mur and SV Leoben there were 5 clubs in the RLM. For the time being, the Salzburg clubs continued to play in the "Tauern League North" and the Tyrolean and Vorarlberg clubs in the "Arlbergliga", and the "Regionalliga West" only existed from 1960/61.

With the introduction of the "RLM", the previous "league" continued to be called "Landesliga Steiermark" with twelve participants from 1959/60. The first "RLM" 1959/60 comprised only 11 clubs, SV nitrogen Linz (also known as "SVS Linz") was the first champion, Radenthein landed on rank 3.

Since the "RLM" was organized jointly by the associations of Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria, the Styrian regional league had become third class. This did not change with the introduction of the nationwide 2nd Bundesliga in 1974, because in return the "RLM" was dropped. The clubs of the third-class regional leagues Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria played the promoted team in the 2nd Bundesliga in a relegation round.

The number of clubs eligible to start varies in these years. The top division started with twelve clubs, one year later the league was increased with 14 participants, in the 1970/71 season there were 15, a year later 16, again a year later 15 and another year in the 1973/71 season / 74 again 14 clubs. The champions in the 1960s and early 1970s were WSV Eisenerz, Grazer SC, ASK Voitsberg, ASK Phönix Hönigsberg, WSV Rosenthal, ASK Köflach, WSV Fohnsdorf (2 ×), WSV Liezen, ASK Voitsberg, SC Bruck / Mur, ATUS Weiz, WSV Liezen, SV Flavia Solva, WSV Lapp-Finze Graz and Deutschlandsberger SC.

The Regionalliga Mitte was abolished. As a result, the Landesliga Styria, which was increased to 18 clubs, remained the third division. In the next season, the league was reduced to 16 clubs. The winners of the highest Styrian league were WSV Liezen (2 ×), Kapfenberger SV (2 ×), Red Star Knittlfeld, SV Flavia Solva (6 ×), ASK Voitsberg (2 ×), WSV Thörl, LUV Graz (3 ×), WSV Zeltweg and TSV Hartberg.

Name (sponsor)

The regional league in Styria has been held with a sponsor in the name since 2007. Before that, the top league was called the Styrian League. The national league has had the following sponsors and name changes in its name.

  • 1st class: 1923 / 24–1937 / 38
  • District class South / Gauliga Styria: 1938/39–1944/45
  • State League Styria: 1945/46–1993/94
  • Styrian League: 1994 / 95-2006 / 07
  • the sponsor is in the signature in connection with 'Landesliga':

Game mode

The national league plays the championship with 16 teams. The championship will be played in a round trip and a second round, each with 15 match days. The pairings are determined by drawing lots before the start of the first half of the season. The championship season consists of 30 game days.

After the championship is over, the first in the table (champions) is entitled to promotion to the third-class regional league center . At the end of the championship season, as many teams are relegated from the regional league, taking into account the Styrian relegated from the regional league center and the promoted from the three upper leagues, until the number of teams is 16. The number of relegated teams from the regional league to the Styrian leagues thus varies between two and four clubs.

From the 2014/2015 season onwards, the team that is placed on the first non-relegation place after the end of the championship, in the best case 13th place in the final table of the past championship, must play against the top-ranked second in the league, who is not directly promoted, to relegation games. The qualification will be played with a round trip in the week immediately following the end of the national league championship and will be played according to the ÖFB cup rules.

If the remaining worst-placed team of the regional league has reached at least 12th place in the final table of the past championship, the relegation of the regional league / upper league is suspended for the respective game year. With four permanent relegations from the regional league, no relegation will be held.

If after the end of the current championship a club as champions rejects promotion to the regional league center or voluntarily retires from the Styrian regional league with its team, it is ranked last in the table and relegated to the upper league. In the new league, this club may not be promoted in the first year of play and receives an additional 10 minus points in the first year of play after voluntary relegation.

If a club in the Styrian regional league voluntarily or for other reasons (e.g. insolvency proceedings) stops playing the team during the current championship, it will be ranked last in the table and will be used for the subsequent championship in the lowest performance level belonging to it regionally ( this is currently the 1st class). A voluntary relegated to a 1st class starts the new championship without minus points, but has no right of promotion in the first season after the voluntary relegation.

Beginning with the 2015/2016 championship, the Styrian Football Association adopted a regulation of the Bundesliga for games in the regional league, which provides that if a team withdraws from the current competition, if they are eliminated during the winter break, i.e. after the first half of the season, everyone Results of the fixtures of this team are canceled and the team concerned is ranked last in the table. This regulation was already applied in the 2015/2016 game year, which influenced the course of the championship in the Styrian regional league through the withdrawal of the team from FC Piberstein Lankowitz, as only 28 out of 30 game days were rated.

The cessation of the team of FC Piberstein Lankowitz in January 2016 meant that the future champions FC Gleisdorf 09 started the second half of the championship with a deduction of 3 points, which he scored as the only winning team against FC Piberstein Lankowitz. The competitors for promotion to the Regionalliga Mitte, SV Gnas and USV St. Anna am Aigen, who drew in their first round games against FC Piberstein Lankowitz, only had to give up 1 point and were placed in the first two places in the table before the now third-placed FC Gleisdorf 09 ranked.
