The Austrian Football Championship 1991/92 was organized by the Austrian Football Association . The first-class 1st division and the second-class 2nd division were merged this season through a playoff mode. The regional league east (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) and west (Salzburg, Tyrol, Vorarlberg) as well as the regional leagues of Carinthia, Upper Austria and Styria acted as the third performance level .

Playoff leagues (1st and 2nd division)

mode

The championship in the 1st and 2nd division was initially held in autumn with 12 teams each in a single round, so that each team initially completed 22 games. This was followed by the division into the championship playoff (1st to 8th of the 1st division), middle playoff (9th to 12th of the 1st division and 1st to 4th of the 2nd division) and relegation playoff (5th to 12th division) . to 12th of the 2nd division) for the spring championship. This meant that in the master playoff champions and European Cup starting places were determined, in the middle playoff promotions and relegations between 1st and 2nd division and in the relegation playoff the relegated to the regional and national leagues. In the championship and relegation playoffs, games, goals and points were taken into spring. The points were halved (and the result rounded up if necessary) to increase the tension in the spring. This rounding up benefited Austria Wien, because the team was one point behind Salzburg after the autumn, but like Salzburg also got 17 points on the trip. Naturally, the teams in the middle playoff did not take any points and goals from autumn into the spring season.

General

The duel of the past two seasons between Swarovski and Vienna Austria got an additional title competitor with Salzburg Austria in the championship season of 1991/92. The fight for the title was correspondingly exciting, with Salzburg Austria leading with two points ahead of Vienna Austria and Swarovski before the last match day. Swarovski was virtually out of the running due to the weaker goal difference, the title had previously been lost at Stahl Linz with a 0: 1. Austria also seemed out of the running with the same result at St. Pölten. But there was still the game against Salzburg in Vienna, so the championship beckoned if they won. Over 40,000 spectators came to the decisive direct duel in the Prater Stadium, Ogris and Pfeffer shot their eleven to victory with a 2-1. This championship finish had consequences insofar as Swarovski announced the dissolution of the club and transferred its gaming license to FC Wacker Innsbruck from the Regionalliga Tirol. Wiener Austria was finally qualified for the UEFA Champions League 1992/93 , Cup finalist Admira / Wacker played in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1991/92 and Salzburger Austria, FC Wacker Innsbruck, who played amateur football shortly before, and - thanks to the exclusion of the Serbian clubs - Rapid started in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup . The most successful clubs were both Austria and Admira / Wacker, some failed in the round of 16 due to the away goals rule, the others only in extra time. A curiosity arose from the halving of points in the middle of the championship. Here Vienna Austria got one point due to the odd number while Salzburg could be halved correctly with an even number of points. If it hadn't been for this halving of points, Salzburg would have become champions.

Incidents

After the 4: 4 in the last round on June 4th between Grazer AK and the Wiener Sport-Club , where the local had already led 4: 1 and the Viennese from the 78th minute still the for the draw and thus belonging to "First Division" had scored the required goals, the managing director of First Vienna FC 1894 , which was relegated to the "Second Division" , located Heinz Havelka. He also doubted the eligibility of the sports club player Gernot Zirngast, who had been suspended from a yellow card. However, since it was a replay of the match that had been canceled the day before at break, Zirngast's non-participation on that day was considered to be the cancellation of this suspension.
