Bocoio is a city in the central highlands of Angola about 100 kilometers northeast of Lobito and 140 kilometers northeast of Benguela .

history

During the Angolan civil war (1975-2002) the region was fiercely contested, the area is still considered to be badly affected by landmines . In the Munizip Bocoio, extensive measures have been initiated in particular by Deutsche Welthungerhilfe , the United Nations World Food Program and the Sankt Barbara Deutschland Foundation , which are intended to enable the population who fled to the coastal cities during the long civil war to return to the fertile highlands.

Climate and economy

The tropical climate alternates between dry months and the rainy months from September to April. In addition to corn , potatoes and sweet potatoes , beans are also grown, mostly for self-sufficiency.

The majority of the residents are unemployed, some are employed in mining. On average, they own a quarter or a half acre property on which they try to grow vegetables. During the dry season, they collect wood to be sold for firing or as charcoal. In 2012, a drought destroyed around 55,000 hectares of farmland in and around Bocoio. Corn and soybean plantations were particularly affected. The "pineapple baron" Simão Cavalo has recently been growing pineapples and exporting them to the neighboring countries of Namibia and South Africa (16 tons in 2017). A factory for processing 5000 liters of pineapple juice a day was due to start operations in summer 2018.

Administration and customs

Bocoio is the seat of the district of the same name ( Município ) in the province of Benguela . The district covers 5612 km² and has 154,446 inhabitants (2017 estimate). Mayor ( administrador local ) has been Paulino Chimbundu Gayeta since February 20, 2018, who primarily wants to take care of the desolate infrastructure, including inadequate roads, ailing schools and insufficiently available cell phone antennas. The carnival is traditionally celebrated in Bocoio lavishly.

Bocoio borders Sumbe and Cassongue counties in the north, Balombo counties in the east , Ganda and Cubal counties in the south , and Lobito and Benguela counties in the west .

There are five municipalities (Comunas) in the Bocoio district:

  • Bocoio
  • Chila with 21 895 inhabitants (2003)
  • Cubal do Lumbo with 17 826 inhabitants (2003)
  • Monte-Belo with 30 680 inhabitants (2003)
  • Passe with 19 857 inhabitants (2003)
