The German Welthungerhilfe e. V. is a German aid organization for development cooperation and emergency aid based in Bonn . Since it was founded in 1962, it has carried out over 8,500 aid projects in 70 countries in Africa , Latin America and Asia with around 3.27 billion euros .

In 2016 there were international projects in 39 countries and 17 domestic projects. The association describes itself as religiously and politically independent and has 404 full-time and 26 volunteer employees. The tax status is charitable and charitable. It bears the donation seal of the German Central Institute for Social Issues . In December 2014, Welthungerhilfe was awarded World Vision as the most transparent organization in Germany.

Goals and principles

The organization has set itself the goal of eradicating world hunger and poverty . According to the basic principle of helping people to help themselves , it works with local organizations to help people in developing countries to free themselves from hunger and poverty and to provide for sustainable supplies. In addition, Welthungerhilfe would like to raise awareness of global problems in the German and European public and politics through projects in Germany.

The association was founded in 1962 on the initiative of the then Federal President Heinrich Lübke as the German Committee for the Fight against Hunger . It formed the German section of the Freedom From Hunger Campaign , which in 1961 by the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Binay Ranjan Sen had been launched. In 1967 the name was changed to the current name. Honorary board chairmen (change of official title to president in 2008) of the organization were:

structure

The respective Federal President has been the patron of the organization since it was founded . In 2008 the association gave itself a new management structure. In November 2018, the lawyer and u. a. Chairwoman of the Council for Sustainable Development Marlehn Thieme ; Her deputy is the director of the Center for Development Research at the University of Bonn Joachim von Braun . Despite a rapidly growing amount of private donations from the population (2016: 44.7 million euros), the work of the association continues to be financed mainly from public grants (2016: 213.4 million euros). The largest public donors are the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ), the EU Commission and the Federal Foreign Office . Apart from these main sources of income, income is also generated from the items “Welthungerhilfe Foundation” (2016: 0.8 million euros) and “Interest and other income” (2016: 2.2 million euros). The administrative share of the organization was 4.9% in 2016 (2018: 3.2%). Another 9.7% went into advertising and public relations in 2016 (2018: 5.1%).

activities

In addition to immediate disaster relief , Welthungerhilfe supports people in developing countries mainly in the areas of rural development and food security . In addition, projects for the restoration of the basic infrastructure (schools, roads, etc.), social integration and education , the development of civil society and health care are carried out.

Millennium Village Project

In Germany and Europe, Welthungerhilfe, together with other organizations, takes a critical look at current development policy and acts accordingly on government agencies. In 2016, 17 different projects in Germany raised awareness of global problems in the German and European public and politics. It also publishes z. B. regularly together with the children's aid organization terre des hommes a report on the reality of development aid. Welthungerhilfe is a member of the German umbrella association of development non-governmental organizations VENRO . Together with the Alliance2015 network , a network of seven European aid organizations, it also conducts political lobbying at European level. It also promotes a contemporary approach to development issues in school lessons through a range of its own materials and offers a range of hands-on activities.

Volunteers support the association with events in which donations for the aid projects are raised.

The Global Hunger Index has been published every October since 2006 by Welthungerhilfe, the International Research Institute for Nutrition Policy and, since 2007, by Concern Worldwide .

transparency

The Phineo analysis company carried out a transparency study in 2014 and tested 50 donation organizations in various categories. It was determined how transparently the organizations provided information about their strategy, activities and impact. Welthungerhilfe presents its work transparently on its website and in December 2014, together with the aid organization World Vision, was named the most transparent organization in Germany.
