Joachim von Braun (agricultural economist)

Joachim von Braun (born July 10, 1950 in Brakel , Westphalia ) is a German agricultural scientist and currently director of a department of the Center for Development Research at the University of Bonn and President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences . Previously, he was Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute in Washington .

Life

Joachim came from the Silesian noble family von Braun . From 1970 to 1975 he studied agricultural sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and received his doctorate with a thesis on agricultural labor markets. He completed his habilitation in agricultural economics on food security in developing countries, both at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen .

After several research stays in Africa , Russia and China , he was appointed founding director of the Center for Development Research (ZEF) at the University of Bonn in 1997 . In 2002 Braun became head of the International Food Policy Research Institute ( IFPRI) in Washington, one of the leading research institutions in the field of world food policy.

In addition to numerous situation reports on the global food situation in recent years, his well-known work includes studies on food security and the economics of famine , work on technical progress, agricultural trade policy, rural financial systems and environmental policy . Braun participated as a spokesperson at events of global importance, for example at the Rio Conference in 1992 , the World Food Summits in 1996 and 2002, and at the beginning of December 2007 at the “World Food Forum” of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in Beijing .

Von Braun has been Vice President of Welthungerhilfe since November 2012 . He has been a member of the Corps Borussia Bonn since 1971 .
