The Center for Development Research (ZEF) is an international and interdisciplinary think tank ( think tank ) at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn , founded in 1995 as part of the Bonn-Berlin Compensation with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia Founded. The former federal capital Bonn should be strengthened by these and other scientific institutions as an internationally recognized scientific location and as a center of development cooperation. The institute began its research work in 1997. Until 2004, ZEF and the Center for European Integration Research (ZEI) formed the International Science Forum Bonn (IWB). In 2015, it was 86 percent financed by third-party funds. Around 50 scientists work at ZEF and around 150 active doctoral candidates from all over the world are supported here.

Since 2010, the ZEF has achieved a leading role in the top 50 in the "Global Go To Think Tank Index Report of the University of Pennsylvania". In 2014, 2015 and 2016 it was ranked as the third best institution in the "Top Science and Technology Think Tanks" category the Max Planck Institute (Germany) and the Information and Technology Foundation (IITF, USA).

ZEF directors are the German agricultural economist Joachim von Braun , Christian Borgemeister and Solvay Gerke.

Research, advice, training

ZEF is dedicated to interdisciplinary research into political, economic and general development . The institute advises governments, national and international organizations and companies. It trains specialists in development issues.

The research activities take place within the framework of projects that are integrated into three core departments:

Since May 2014 the Secretariat of the Right Livelihood College, which works closely with the Right Livelihood Award (“Alternative Nobel Prize”), has been based at ZEF. Previously the headquarters of the RLC Secretariat was in Penang , Malaysia.
