Alan ( Latin also Alanus ) is a male given name , which occasionally occurs as a family name.

Origin and meaning

The origin of the name is controversial, possibly it is of Celtic - Breton origin meaning "small rock", "handsome, stately" or "warrior"; in Turkmen it means purple or striking / preferred. See also Alanalp. According to another theory, the name means "from the people of the Alans ".

The name often appears in France, England, the USA and Canada, but also in Transoxania / Turkmenistan.
