Alan Bergman (1996)

Alan Bergman (born September 11, 1925 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American songwriter, songwriter and singer. He works primarily for television and film productions, and his songs, written with his wife Marilyn , have won three Oscar awards. The couple, which have been working together since the 1960s, have also won the Golden Globe Award twice and the Emmy three times , and have won numerous other awards.

biography

Beginnings

Bergman, son of Jewish parents, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1948 and completed his master's degree at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Bergman also completed further training at the Ethical Culture School in New York. During the time of the Second World War he served as an infantryman and during this time he staged special events for which he also wrote the numbers. From 1945 to 1953 he directed television shows for CBS in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania . It was Johnny Mercer who encouraged Bergman to move to Los Angeles and work as a professional songwriter. In 1955 he joined the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and wrote production numbers for special television shows for Jo Stafford and songs for Fred Astaire and Marge and Gower Champion . He also wrote songs for revues and nightclub programs.

Important employees

Bergman's stage music includes That's Life (Los Angeles), Ice Capades of 1957 and Something More! ( Broadway ). His most important musical collaborators, besides his wife, are Marilyn, Michel Legrand , Marvin Hamlisch , Dave Grusin , Cy Coleman , Henry Mancini , Johnny Mandel , John Williams , Quincy Jones and James Newton Howard . Also included are Lew Spence, Norman Luboff , Paul Weston , Sammy Fain , Alex North and Billy Goldenberg . Together with the composer Lew Spence, Marilyn and Alan Bergman wrote the lyrics for Dean Martin's album Sleep Warm in 1958 and for Frank Sinatra's album Nice'n'Easy in 1960 .

First film and other work

In 1961 the Bergmans wrote their first lyrics for a title song for a film, for the drama The Right Approach . Spence provided the music. In 1964, Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote lyrics for their first Broadway musical Something More! to the music of Sammy Fain . One of the earliest works by the Bergmans is the theme of the 1967 literary film adaptation In the Heat of the Night , which they co-wrote with Quincy Jones and which was sung by Ray Charles . The couple worked again with Jones in 1982 on Michael Jackson's soundtrack album ET the Extra-Terrestrial , for which the Bergmans wrote the lyrics for Someone In the Dark . Another collaboration with Jones presented the tribute album by Ennio Morricone We All Love Ennio Morricone is, for them the text to I Knew I Loved You had written a by Celine Dion sung song.

The following year, the couple first met Michel Legrand, with whom they created the Oscar-winning song The Windmills of Your Mind for the heist movie Thomas Crown is unbelievable . This resulted in a long-term collaboration. The song sung by Noel Harrison was an international hit in 1969. The Bergman / Legrand team was also responsible for the song What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life? , which was featured in the film Happy Ending for a Marriage (1969), and for the song How Do You Keep The Music Playing for the comedy film Zwei dicke Freunde (1982) and the song The. by Barbra Streisand in the film Yentl (1983) Way He Makes Me Feel . The trio was awarded an Oscar for the soundtrack of the film. Streisand was she who in 1973 the song The Way We Were from the Romance Way We Were , one of the most famous songs of the Bergmans had sung, which was also awarded an Oscar. The Bergmans also co-wrote the songs for the opening ceremonies of An American Reunion at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC In 1999, a festival of songs by Alan and Marilyn Bergman was presented at Carnegie Hall in New York. Among the stars who honored the Bergmans were Beatrice Arthur , Mary Chapin Carpenter , Freddy Cole , Cy Coleman and Michel Legrand. Jazz pianist, professor and composer Billy Taylor , who was then Artistic Director of Jazz at the Kennedy Center , commissioned Alan and Marilyn Bergman to write a jazz song cycle in 2001. The show running in the Kennedy Center, which was expanded with lyrics by Larry Gelbart , was very successful. A collaboration with the composer Cy Coleman came about on Portraits in Jazz: A Gallery of Songs .

In 2007 Alan Bergman released his first album as a singer Lyrically, Alan Bergman , for which he wrote the lyrics with his wife, and which was arranged by Alan Broadbent and Jeremy Lubbock and accompanied by the Berlin Radio Orchestra, was released on Verve Records. John Bush praised the album for all music and especially Bergman's excellent interpretation skills. Christopher Loudon wrote in JazzTimes that Bergman's voice was a revelation that gave both the wise old Sinatra and the clever Fred Astaire a hint of the unusual dreaminess of Chet Baker .

A collaboration for five songs came about with composer Roger Kellaway for Visions of America , a photo symphony that celebrates the landmarks and music of America. The event premiered in January 2009 with the participation of the Philadelphia Pops Orchestra.

Alan Bergman serves on the Library of Congress National Film Preservation Board , the Johnny Mercer Foundation Board , the Artists' Rights Foundation Board, and the Jazz Bakery Board of Directors. Together with his wife, he is also on the Executive Committee of the Music Department of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

Barbra Streisand

Alan and Marilyn Bergman wrote the One Voice concert with Barbra Streisand in 1986 and for the legendary Barbra Streisand concert tour in 1994, as well as the HBO special Barbra Streisand: The Concert , for which they received a CableACE Award nomination and were nominated in two other categories. Streisand, who wrote the music for her film drama Nuts… Crazy herself, with the support of the Bergmans, released her 33rd studio album in 2011, a collection of songs by longtime friends Alan and Marilyn Bergman, entitled What Matters Most - The Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman as a tribute to the Bergmans.

Private

Allan Bergman has been married to his wife Marilyn, nee Keith, since 1958. The couple have a daughter, Julie Bergman-Sender, who works as an independent film producer. In 1980, Marilyn and Alan Bergman were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame . In addition to countless awards - including the first prize of the Johnny Mercer Foundation for life's work in 2003 - the couple also received honorary doctorates from several American universities. In 2011, Alan Bergman received a special recognition from his university, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which presented him with the Alumnus Award.
