action

The third processing of the material moves the story into the rock and pop world: the celebrated rock star John Norman Howard lives out his success with the intensive consumption of alcohol and other drugs. Immediately after a failed concert for this reason, Howard disrupts the performance of the unsuccessful singer Esther Hoffman in a nightclub. On the one hand she is angry about Howard's behavior, on the other hand she is also fascinated by the womanizer - just as he is by her. A love story with some confusion and a time of renewed separation begins, until they finally get married.

John now wants to help Esther to her own career as a singer. To this end, he presses her hard to go on stage at one of his own concerts. This “guest performance” is the first step towards success for Esther: the audience is enthusiastic, she is discovered by the music industry, makes her own record and begins a steep career. At the same time, John's career begins to stagnate; his new record is not selling well. First of all, John is still committed to the success of his wife and works to make her a star. But when his own success is increasingly denied him, the tensions between him and Esther increase. He takes refuge in alcohol and other drugs and sinks into insignificance as an artist. When he has overcome the low and the relationship is back on track, he dies in an accident.

Reviews

The Heyne Filmlexikon wrote, "The new version of the old and beautiful Judy Garland film turned out to be a terrible stirring piece because Barbra Streisand had the unfortunate ambition to take over the direction, as it were." “The love scenes” would underpin this impression: “They could hardly have been more brittle”.

Film-dienst wrote that the film was giving away the topic “through the superficial psychologization of the people and the staging geared towards external visual values”. He was "not a critical examination of the show business, but a sweet and banal love story".

Die Zeit , March 1978: Her co-star Kris Kristofferson degrades Miss Streisand to a simple cue-giver. And she also does her best to defeat her undeniable presence as a “performer” with bombastic decorations, dialogues and costumes. “A Star is Born” is a larger than life ego trip: narcissism with self-destructive traits.
