Sally Kirkland learned acting from Lee Strasberg . She made her debut in the early 1960s, both in small supporting roles in films such as Twist ... The Skirts Fly (1961) as well as in the off-Broadway plays . Around the mid-1960s she was a frequent guest in the Factory , Andy Warhol's studio , who also filmed her for his screen tests and in whose film 13 Most Beautiful Women (1964) she appeared. She is considered the first actress to appear nude in public in a demanding play in the USA, which happened in the play Sweet Eros (1968) by Terrence McNally .
In the film, Breakheart Pass (1975) Kirkland starred with Charles Bronson and Richard Crenna in the film comedy Private Benjamin (1980) next to Goldie Hawn . For her leading role in the television film House of the Living Dead (1991) she was again nominated for a Golden Globe. She later took on some lead roles in relatively lesser-known films such as Double Threat (1993), Murderous Affair (1993), Guns and Lipstick (1995) and Mothers and Daughters (2002). For her role in the film I wish you were dead (2002), in which it alongside Christopher Lloyd occurred, it was for the DVD Exclusive Award nominated.
Kirkland was married to Michael Jarrett from 1975 and Mark Hebert from 1985. Both marriages ended in divorce.
