Bruce Almighty (AKA Bruce Almighty ) is a comedy film directed by Tom Shadyac from the year 2003 with Jim Carrey in the lead role.

action

Bruce Nolan is a disgruntled television reporter for a local Buffalo station, covering everyday local events for Channel 7 Eyewitness News . With the previous anchorman on the main newscast retiring, Bruce expects to be his successor. Shortly before a one-off live coverage, however, he learns that his colleague Evan Baxter will get the job. He freaks out during the transfer and is then released.

After a series of further downfalls, he blames God for the fact that his life is not going the way he imagines it. The Judeo-Christian God actually contacts him by sending him a phone number on his pager and directing him to an address where he is offered a job, that of God himself. God will then transfer all of his abilities to him while he is on vacation. There are only two rules for Bruce: he cannot tell anyone that he is God, and he can not influence people's free will .

Bruce takes advantage of his newfound powers by  converting his old car (a Datsun 280Z ) into a new Saleen S7 sports car and moving the moon closer to earth for a romantic evening with his girlfriend Grace . In order to be more successful professionally, he humiliates his rival Evan in front of the camera, has the body of Jimmy Hoffa found and a meteorite hit while a report is running. Since he is always the only one with a camera on site for his sensational reports and can report exclusively, he will soon be called Mr. Exclusive .

But slowly Bruce's divinity grows over his head. Since he answers yes to all of the prayers that reach him , thousands of people win the lottery at the same time , resulting in low odds and angry protests. The meteorite impact led to power outages and the changed moon to floods . Finally his girlfriend also leaves him.

Ultimately, the process of purification sets in with Bruce , which ends with the fact that, even as a normal person, he gets his job and his girlfriend back and reconciles himself with himself and his life.

background

  • In the film, Bruce catches the moon with a lasso to pull it closer, a nod to the film Isn't Life Beautiful? in which the drawing with the inscription "George Lassos The Moon" appears. When Bruce influences his dog to operate the remote control, the film switches to the same film and the scene is shown in which the main actor asks whether he should fetch the moon from the sky with a lasso.
  • The picture next to Bruce's head after he's been mugged shows news anchor Walter Cronkite . According to the director's audio commentary, the image is supposed to symbolize the “false god” Bruce follows. Later in the film, Bruce leans on a golden calf at his party, believed to be the culmination of his self-centered self- indulgence.
  • The e-mail service that Bruce uses to process the prayers is called "Yahweh", which on the one hand is to remind of Yahoo , on the other hand the reconstructed name of the god YHWH in the English language, which is not secured in the pronunciation (German spelling: Yahweh).
  • A prayer from Grace can be seen briefly in the film: You can read on the monitor “please guide our president's decisions”. At the time, George W. Bush President of the United States.
  • Singer Tony Bennett has a guest appearance in the film in which he plays himself and sings the title "If I ruled the world".
  • The film was banned in Egypt because it " undermines Islamic and other religious values" and because it "damages the Almighty if one dares to play him through an actor". The film was later released in Egypt and Malaysia for ages 18 and over.
  • "Hi-yo Silver", the exclamation often used by Jim Carrey (see Ace Ventura - An animal detective ), refers to the television series The Lone Ranger  - Silver is the hero's horse, well-known in the United States .
  • In the film, a homeless person is shown several times who does not speak, but communicates using signs. In the end, the viewer learns that the homeless man was God in disguise all along.
  • With production costs of 81 million US dollars approximately US $ 484.5 million were recorded worldwide. Almost 68 million US dollars of this was reached on the opening weekend in the USA alone.
  • Steve Carell, who can be seen in a supporting role in the film, plays the leading role of the same name in 2007 in the sequel "Evan Almighty". He bears the same name as in "Bruce Almighty". Morgan Freeman embodies God in both films.

Reviews

“Moderately original, at the same time highly moral comedy, which derives neither depth nor convincing humor from the subject. Even the main actor achieves little beyond the familiar grimacing. "

“Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston play a normal couple in 'Bruce Almighty'. No high-flyers, but normal people with normal problems that are solved with divine help. A delicious comedy that offers a lot of puns in the English version. "
