Evan Almighty (AKA Evan Almighty ) is a comedy film directed by Tom Shadyac from the year 2007 with Steve Carell and Morgan Freeman in the lead roles. The film is a sequel to the comedy Bruce Almighty from the year 2003 .

action

Evan Baxter is elected to the United States Congress after promising voters that he would change the world. Evan then prays to God to help him change the world. A short time later God appears to him and instructs him to build an ark because the flood is to come on September 22nd of that year . Evan starts building an ark with his sons. At the same time, Evan grows a beard that can no longer be shaved off. Various animals, two of each kind, also come to him.

Evans wife Joan sees Evans public confession on television at a congressional meeting that God has instructed him to build an ark, whereupon she leaves him with the children and wants to go to their mother. Evan is believed to be insane and faces suspension from office. Joan returns after God spoke to her about the value of faith and trust, without revealing himself to be God. Countless animals have now gathered around the construction site. After Evan has convinced his wife and children to build it, they and the animals help him complete the ark. Evan is suspended.

On September 22nd, the sky was clear and the press gathered in front of the finished ark. The animals go into the ark. There are dark clouds and it rains, but the rain quickly disappears. Suddenly, however, a large dam bursts above the valley and a flash flood pours in the direction of the city. People can save themselves on the ark. The ark travels through the streets of Washington to the Capitol in the flash flood . In conclusion, God tells Evan that one can change the world by doing good deeds on a small scale, one selfless gesture after the other is sufficient (“one act of random kindness at a time”).

background

The film was shot in various locations in Washington, DC , Virginia and California . Filming began in March 2006, production ended in August 2006. Production costs were estimated at 175 million US dollars , including the cost of marketing, the cost was estimated at around 200 million US dollars. At the time of its release, this made the film the most expensive comedy in film history to date. The film celebrated its world premieres in Russia and Kazakhstan on June 21, 2007. In the United States, it was released in theaters on June 22, 2007, and in Germany on August 9, 2007. On the opening weekend, the film was shown in US cinemas around 31, $ 2 million. The film grossed almost $ 100.3 million in cinemas in the United States and around $ 73 million in other countries. By the end of August 2007, over 380,000 viewers were counted at the German box office.

Morgan Freeman already played the role of "God" in Bruce Almighty . Steve Carell also had the role of Evan Baxter and was then the antagonist of the main character Bruce Nolan , who was played by Jim Carrey . Jon Stewart has a guest appearance in the film and plays himself in an excerpt from The Daily Show .

At the beginning of the film a movie theater, the film entitled "The 40 Year-Old Virgin Mary" is on the program panel ( German , "The 40-year-old Virgin") to see an allusion to another movie with Steve Carell in the lead role, namely The 40 Year-Old Virgin (German title: Jungfrau (40), male, looking for ... ). Evans Hummer H2's license plate reads "GEN 614". Evans ' Gene Electric' clock radio with the ' gene ' highlighted rings every morning at 6:14 am. The wood for building the ark is always delivered to the wrong address, namely house number 614 (instead of 416). These are all references to the first book of Moses ( Gen esis) chapter 6 , verse 14 : “Make yourself a box of fir wood and make chambers in it and cover it with pitch inside and out.” ( Gen 6,14  EU ). Evan became aware of these allusions when he saw a sign on television that read "Genesis 6:14". The nameplate of "Gott", which he wears as a waitress in the American Diner, reads "Al Mighty", an allusion to "Almighty" ( German omnipotent or almighty ). At the end of the film, the letters “ARK” are written in the sand. In the original English version, this is explained as an abbreviation for " A ct of R andom K indness", and it has an ambiguity, as Ark is the English word for ark . In the German dubbing, ARK is shown as an abbreviation for "self-sacrificing, honest and clever", the reference to the ark is omitted.

In order to stay true to the ecological message of the film during the production, care was taken to minimize the ecological negative effects and to be able to show a neutral CO₂ balance for the production at the end . To this end, around 400 production employees were given a bicycle as a gift, so that they could do without cars on shorter journeys, and the emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide were calculated for necessary journeys and flights , and a corresponding equivalent was planted on trees, which was at the end of production in 2050 Trees. In addition, as part of the marketing campaign and the release of the film, additional donations were called for and a website was set up on which every visitor could contribute to further tree planting with donations. Through campaigns and donations, The Conservation Fund was able to plant around 15,000 more trees. Instead of destroying backdrops and buildings after filming has ended, attempts have also been made to recycle as many materials as possible. Components of houses, such as windows and doors and also cedar planks of the ark, were donated to non-profit organizations such as Habitat for Humanity .

criticism

Doris Toumarkine wrote on filmjournal.com that the film was abundantly blessed with good supporting cast and was both fun and serious in getting its message across about family, responsibility and the environment.

Peter Travers wrote in Rolling Stone magazine on June 20, 2007 that the film was "shamelessly childish, pseudo-religious, insincere". He found the “most expensive Hollywood comedy of all time” “not too funny” and calculated that each laugh must have cost around 20 million US dollars.

According to the verdict of the Lexicon of International Films , the film is "the continuation of a hit film Bruce Almighty , 2003, which not only fails conceptually, but also suffers from its overwhelmed leading actor and disappointed even with the expensive special effects."

Steve Carell won a Teen Choice Award for Best Scream and was nominated in two other categories. The film received another nomination in the category Best Comedy .
