Armstrong is a small impact crater in the southern part of the Mare Tranquillitatis . It is located about 50 kilometers northeast of the Apollo 11 landing area . Ranger 8's impact site is north of the crater .
Named after Neil Armstrong , commander of the Apollo 11 lunar landing mission, it is the easternmost in a series of three craters named in honor of the Apollo 11 crew members.
Before the renaming by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), he served as Sabine E known. Sabine Crater is located west of Armstrong.
