A $ 380,000 settlement was reached between Bennett and Asia Argento, according to the New York Times , after Bennett alleged that Argento sexually assaulted him on May 9, 2013. He was 17 years old then. Bennett said he felt "extremely confused, humiliated and disgusted" after the encounter. His attorney wrote that Bennett was so traumatized in the years following the incident that his job performance, income and mental health were in decline. They first met when Bennett played Argento's son in The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2004) when Bennett was seven.

The allegation of sexual abuse of the then 17-year-old actor sparked a public discourse: Argento had previously received media attention as one of the main protagonists of the MeToo movement; she was one of the first actresses to accuse Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse. They are mainly accused of hypocrisy . The MeToo activist movement has also come under fire.
