Hostage (Original title: Hostage ) is an American - German thriller from 2005 by director Florent Emilio Siri with Bruce Willis in the leading role. The script is based on the 2001 novel of the same name by Robert Crais .

action

Jeff Talley heads the local police force in the small town of Bristo Camino in Ventura County , although he is significantly overqualified for the job. Previously he was the chief mediator in hostage-taking of the LAPD from Los Angeles . He voluntarily gave up this career after a mentally disturbed hostage-taker killed his wife and son before he committed suicide. Talley could have saved the son if he had sacrificed the mother. When the son died in his arms, he blamed himself for the bloodbath and decided to move to the rural area.

Walter Smith also lives in Bristo Camino with his children Jennifer and Tommy. You live in a luxurious villa on a mountain slope. Smith leads a normal life outside, but works as an accountant for a criminal organization . The three teenagers Dennis, his brother Kevin and their mutual psychopathic friend Mars become aware of the apparently wealthy Smiths in town, and Dennis decides to steal their precious Cadillac. To get the car keys, they break into the villa, but are surprised by the family there. In a scuffle, Walter Smith is knocked down by Dennis with a gun. The Smith children are handcuffed so that the intruders can search the house undisturbed. Little Tommy manages to trigger the silent alarm beforehand. A patrol officer investigates the alarm and is gunned down by Mars at the gate of the villa, as Mars hears over the ongoing radio traffic that the vehicle they came in and that is in front of the house is on the wanted list and the policewoman is suspicious. Jeff Talley, who arrives shortly afterwards, tries to save the policewoman, but she dies in his arms.

Talley, meanwhile informed of the events, is faced with another hostage situation and is glad to be able to hand over the command again quickly. Since the criminal organization Smith works for is in dire need of secret information from Walter Smith, which he had recently saved on a DVD, Talley's role in this hostage situation develops differently: the gang kidnaps Talley's family thereby forcing him to resume negotiations with the youth so that with his help the criminals can get the information from the Smiths' house.

Tommy was now able to break free and reach Talley on his sister's cell phone. This, in turn, helps Talley, as it makes him head of operations again. In return, he makes sure that Tommy gets the required DVD from his father's office.

After a few attempts to negotiate with Dennis, Talley succeeds in evacuating the injured Walter Smith from the house. However, he does not let the ambulance drive to the hospital immediately, but wants to find out from Smith beforehand which secret information the gang urgently needs from him. At the same time, he lets the media spread that Smith died on the way to the hospital.

Talley makes an agreement with Dennis that the teenagers can leave the house by helicopter. The action fails, however, because Mars (against the agreement) also wants to take Jennifer, whom he now regards as "his girl", as a hostage. After that, the situation in the house worsens. The psychopathic Mars first falls Kevin, who wants to leave the house, to death over a staircase and then shoots Dennis. Tommy manages to free his sister who is tied to the bed. He manages to injure Mars in the face with a knife, who is constantly harassing her. But the wound does not prevent him from pursuing the children on their escape.

Talley single-handedly storms the house to save the children. Meanwhile, Mars prepares some Molotov cocktails to set the Smith house on fire. The criminal organization, disguised as an FBI unit, also gains access to the house in order to get the DVD that is so important to them. A large part of her team is turned off by Mars, who has now set the house on fire. However, Talley and the children are stopped by one of the gangsters while they escape the burning house. He wants to shoot her, but is killed from behind by a Molotov cocktail thrown by Mars. Mars now wants to kill Talley and the children too. However, he hesitates to toss his last Molotov cocktail while looking at Jennifer, who he seems to have developed feelings for. Finally, intentionally or unintentionally, he drops the last Molotov cocktail from his hand and burns it himself. This allows Talley and the children to escape.

Finally, with the help of Walter, Jeff manages to free his own family. Walter, grateful for saving his own children, shoots the supposed leader of the gang, enabling Talley to save his own family. During the rescue operation, all the hostage-takers are killed and Talley drives away with his family and Walter in an ambulance. It remains unclear who exactly the accountant's criminal clients were and what the content of the DVD was.

Reviews

“The French filmmaker Florent Siri ( The Deadly Wasp's Nest ) surprises with an imaginative, complex thriller story in which lead actor Bruce Willis again shows himself from his best side. Drastic, dramatic and gloomy! "

“The ingeniously constructed thriller doubles conflict situations and mirrors them reciprocally, but has little to offer apart from the intricate plot complexions. Above all, the characterization of the figures reveals weaknesses. "

"Explosive action in an elegant look, with a Bruce Willis in top form."
