action
Joe Pendleton is the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams football team that wants to win the Super Bowl . He dies in a car accident. He is told in heaven that his death was a mistake and that he should return to earth. Since his body has since been cremated, he is said to return in the body of the recently murdered millionaire Leo Farnsworth.
Pendleton in Farnsworth's body buys the Los Angeles Rams team on their return , baffling his wife Julia and his secretary Tony Abbott - who are lovers and who murdered the millionaire. He wants to gain the power that allows him to play as a quarterback in the new body. Only after a lot of persuasion does the coach Max Corkle allow this assignment.
Pendleton falls in love with environmentalist Betty Logan, who is protesting against some of Farnsworth's industrial projects. He is murdered again by Abbott, whereupon Pendleton takes over the body of an athlete; his previous experiences are erased from memory.

Reviews
- Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that the film combined the “innocence” and “sweetness” of the original 1941 film with its own “satirical bite”. Ebert praised the "wonderfully well-cast" Dyan Cannon and Charles Grodin.
- The lexicon of international films writes: "The remake of a film material from 1941 (" Urlaub vom Himmel ") in a modernized version, directed entirely towards the star Warren Beatty. An amusing entertainment that does not quite get to the satirical core of the script , but is just as appealing as a romantic fantasy fairy tale as it is as a quiet, playful and definitely touching love story. "
