Robert Towne (born November 23, 1934 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American screenwriter , actor and director .

Towne is the author of many scripts for well-known feature films, such as B. Chinatown (1974), with which he won an Oscar , the sequel to The Two Jakes (1990) and Shampoo (1975), as well as the scripts for the first two Mission Impossible films . He is also known for revising existing scripts that have not yet been finalized. Towne z. B. made the script for the film The Godfather .

After working on the script for the film Greystoke for years , The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), he was so annoyed with the production of the actual film that he removed his name from the opening credits and replaced it , had his dog's name, PH Vazak, used on the script. This made Vazak the first dog in Academy Awards history to be nominated for Best Screenplay, but ultimately not to win the Oscar.
