Pignolo is a high quality red wine that is grown in Friuli , Italy .

origin

The Pignolo vine has been grown in Friuli for centuries and was certainly grown in the area of Prepotto , Albana , Rosazzo and Premariacco as early as 1600 . The variety is mentioned in writing in the work Bacchus im Friuli by Abbot Giobatta Michieli , published at the end of the 17th century . The wine made from it is praised as "excellent black wine".

Despite indicative synonyms and morphological similarities, it should not be confused with Aglianico, which according to DNA analyzes of the clearly different Pignola Valtellinese or (the white) Pignoletto.

The name is derived from the elongated grape shape (pigna = pine cone).

distribution

The variety, threatened with extinction after the phylloxera disaster, was successfully reactivated in the 1970s with offshoots from rediscovered vines over a hundred years old. The area under cultivation in 2010 was 93 hectares with a strong upward trend. In 1990 it was only 29 ha. The potential of the Pignolo variety has now been recognized.

Wine

The variety is low-yielding and was therefore unpopular for a long time. It produces light to dark colored, fruity red wines with velvety tannins, as well as aromas of plums and liquorice. It is approved in the DOC wine Colli Orientali del Friuli.

properties

The late-ripening, low-yielding variety is susceptible to “powdery mildew”.
