List of grape varieties

Albana bianca is a white grape variety . It is an old variety from which the white wine of the same name Albana di Romagna is produced in the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna . The Albana di Romagna was the first white wine to receive DOCG status in 1987 . Albana Spumante is a sparkling wine also made from Albana .

The Albana variety is also called Greco or Greco di Ancona , but is not related to the Greco Bianco variety . In a study published in 2008, a relationship to the Garganega grape variety was established at Albana . Due to the not yet identified parents of the Garganega variety, the exact relationship cannot yet be specified. Albana was mentioned as early as the 13th century . There are about 4,500 hectares of vineyards in Emilia-Romagna with Albana planted. The quality of the wines leaves something to be desired, as very high yields per hectare are permitted.

In the growing areas, the varieties Albana a grappolo rondo o gentile, Albana a grappolo fitto, Albana a grappolo lungo, Albanone or Albana grossa are distinguished. It is possibly related to the Riminese variety that can be found in Corsica (→ Viticulture in Corsica ).

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The tip of the shoot is very hairy with white wool, with a crimson tinge. The green young leaves are lightly hairy and speckled copper-colored.
  • The large leaves are five-lobed and deeply indented (see also the article leaf shape ). The stem bay is closed with the ends overlapping. The sheet is serrated to a point. The teeth are set very medium wide in comparison to the grape varieties. The leaf surface (also called blade) is blistered and rough.
  • The cylindrical grape is large, long, shouldered and dense with berries. The round berries are medium-sized and golden yellow in color.

The vigorous grape variety Albana sprouts late and ripens about 30 days after the Gutedel : It is therefore one of the late-ripening varieties. It is often attacked by downy mildew and gray mold rot. Against powdery mildew , it is quite resistant. Their yield is irregular due to their susceptibility to disease.

Albana is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
