List of grape varieties |
Greco Bianco is an autochthonous southern Italian white wine variety . It was already cultivated by the Romans, and it is believed to be derived from the ancient variety Aminea. Aminea has been shown to have been grown in this region, as evidenced by a Roman inscription found at Strongoli . It may be a mutation of Trebbiano ; perhaps it is also related to the Garganega grape variety . However, there is no relationship to the Grechetto variety . A DNA analysis from 2005 suggests that Asprinio Bianco and Greco Bianco are identical.
The name Greco indicates Greek origins. The grape variety is mainly grown in southern Italy along the Ionian Sea . In Campania , the dry Greco di Tufo and the DOC wines Sant'Agata de 'Goti (or Sant'Agata dei Goti), Tamburo and Greco are made from it. In Calabria , the Cirò and the sweet Greco di Bianco as well as the DOC wines Lamezia , Lamezia Greco , Melissa Bianco , Verbicaro Bianco, Bivongi , Donnici , San Vito di Luzzi and Scavigna DOC are pressed from them. In Lazio it is part of Vignanello Greco , and on Capri it is blended with other varieties to make a dry white wine .
The grape variety is also found in the USA and Spain .
