Grechetto is a white wine variety that is mainly cultivated in the Italian provinces of Lucca , Macerata , Perugia , Terni , Rieti and Arezzo in the regions of Lazio , Umbria and Tuscany . The name suggests a Greek origin. In Italy, a planted vineyard area of 798 hectares was raised at the end of the 1990s . The variety provides a full-bodied wine with a nutty aroma, which is often used in blends with other grape varieties. For example, it is part of the DOC winesAssisi Grechetto , Assisi bianco , Bianco di Torgiano , Colli Etruschi Viterbesi Grechetto bianco , Colli Martani Grechetto , Colli Martani Grechetto di Todi , Colli del Trasimeno Grechetto , Colli del Trasimeno bianco, Colli del Trasimeno bianco Vinizzante, Colli del Trasizzante del Trasimeno bianco scelto, Colli del Trasimeno spumante classico, Colline Lucchesi bianco , Montefalco bianco , Orvieto , Orvieto classico, Orvieto classico superiore, Orvieto superiore, Valdichiana Grechetto , Valdichiana bianco vergine frizzulante, Viniano Santo Viniano and Monteperva.
There is also a red variety of Grechetto Rosso .
Despite some suggestive synonyms, there is no relationship to the Greco Bianco variety . On the other hand, according to the ampelograph Bruni, there seem to be distant relationships to the varieties Greco di Tufo # Greco di Tufo bianco and Greco del Vesuvio .
