Valdichiana toscana

The name Valdichiana toscana DOC refers to Italian red , white , rosé and sparkling wines as well as Vin Santo from the provinces of Arezzo and Siena , Tuscany . The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1972 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014. The name Valdichiana or Val di Chiana (German: Valley of the Chiana ) comes from the Chiana river , in whose catchment area the vineyards are located.

The denomination prescribes the following grape varieties for the most important types :

• Valdichiana toscana Bianco or Valdichiana toscana Bianco vergine (also as Spumante or Frizzante ): Must contain at least 20% Trebbiano Toscano . A maximum of 80% Chardonnay , Pinot bianco , Grechetto and / or Pinot Grigio may be added - individually or together. A maximum of 15% other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added - individually or together.
• Valdichiana toscana Rosso and Valdichiana toscana Rosato : at least 50% Sangiovese must be included. A maximum of 50% Cabernet Franc , Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot , Syrah may be added - individually or together. In addition, a maximum of 15% red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be included in the mixture.
• Valdichiana toscana Vin Santo (also called "Riserva"): Must contain at least 50% Trebbiano Toscano and / or Malvasia bianca ( Malvasia Bianca di Candia , Malvasia Bianca Lunga , Malvasia Istriana ) - individually or together. A maximum of 50% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
• The following wines must contain at least 85% of the grape variety mentioned. A maximum of 15% other analogue grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • Valdichiana toscana Chardonnay
  • Valdichiana toscana Grechetto
  • Valdichiana toscana Sangiovese

The Valdichiana toscana Vin Santo can carry the predicate "Riserva" if it is not sold before November 1st of the fourth year after the harvest.

Cultivation

Cultivation and vinification of these wines are only permitted:

• in the province of Arezzo : in the municipalities of Arezzo , Castiglion Fiorentino , Cortona , Foiano , Lucignano , Marciano , Monte San Savino and Civitella in Val di Chiana
• in the province of Siena : in the municipalities of Sinalunga , Torrita di Siena , Chiusi and Montepulciano .

In 2015, 4,791 hl of DOC wine were produced from 84 hectares of vineyards.
