The name Valdichiana toscana DOC refers to Italian red , white , rosé and sparkling wines as well as Vin Santo from the provinces of Arezzo and Siena , Tuscany . The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1972 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014. The name Valdichiana or Val di Chiana (German: Valley of the Chiana ) comes from the Chiana river , in whose catchment area the vineyards are located.

The denomination prescribes the following grape varieties for the most important types :

  • Valdichiana toscana Bianco or Valdichiana toscana Bianco vergine (also as Spumante or Frizzante ): Must contain at least 20% Trebbiano Toscano . A maximum of 80% Chardonnay , Pinot bianco , Grechetto and / or Pinot Grigio may be added - individually or together. A maximum of 15% other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added - individually or together.
  • Valdichiana toscana Rosso and Valdichiana toscana Rosato : at least 50% Sangiovese must be included.   • Valdichiana toscana Vin Santo (also called "Riserva"): Must contain at least 50% Trebbiano Toscano and / or Malvasia bianca ( Malvasia Bianca di Candia , Malvasia Bianca Lunga , Malvasia Istriana ) - individually or together. The Valdichiana toscana Vin Santo can carry the predicate "Riserva" if it is not sold before November 1st of the fourth year after the harvest.
