Elba (wine)

Various white , red , rosé and sparkling wines as well as Vin Santo are produced on the Italian island of Elba ( Tuscany region ) under the name Elba DOC . The wines have had a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC) since 1967 , which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Growing area

The cultivation and vinification of the wines may only take place in the communities on the island of Elba .

generation

The following types of wine may be produced:

  • Elba Rosso and Elba Rosso "Riserva" : at least 60% Sangiovese , at most 40% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added - individually or together.
  • Elba Rosato and Elba Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice : at least 60% Sangiovese , at most 40% other red grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added - individually or together. Furthermore, a maximum of 20% other white grape varieties that are approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • Elba Bianco , Elba Bianco Spumante and Elba Vin santo : 10–70% Trebbiano toscano, 10–70% Ansonica and / or Vermentino may be used. A maximum of 15% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
  • The grape variety mentioned must contain at least 85% of the following wines . A maximum of 15% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.
    • Elba Ansonica and Elba Ansonica passito
    • Elba Vermentino
    • Elba Trebbiano or Elba Procanico (local name)
  • Elba Moscato Passito : 100% Moscato
  • Elba Bianco Passito : 70-100% Ansonica, Moscato, Trebbiano toscano, Vermentino. A maximum of 30% other white grape varieties approved for cultivation in the Tuscany region may be added.

The Elba Rosso wines must have matured for at least 24 months, of which at least 12 months in wooden barrels (counted from November 1st of the harvest year).
