Vermentino grape

Vermentino is a white wine that is believed to have its origins in Italy . It is widely grown in Corsica and Sardinia , Liguria , Tuscany and increasingly in Languedoc . In the east of Provence it is grown under the name of Rolle . In Corsica it is called Vermentinu and occasionally Malvoisie de Corse , which points to the presumed descent from the Malvasia family.

Vermentino is a late ripening grape variety. The wines are usually golden yellow with greenish reflections. Its bouquet is intense, fruity and fragrant. They are mostly dry and aromatic and have a slightly bitter undertone.

The total cultivation area in Italy is approx. 3,850 ha (1999). There it is included in the DOC wines Alghero , Bolgheri , Candia dei Colli Apuani , Colli del Trasimeno , Colline di Levanto , Colline Lucchesi , Golfo del Tigullio , Maremma Toscana , Montecucco , Monteregio di Massa Marittima , Riviera di Ponente , Val di Cornia , Vermentino di Sardegna . The only DOCG wine made from this grape variety is the Sardinian Vermentino di Gallura .

In France the area is around 3,453 ha (source ONIVINS). Smaller stocks are also known in California (→ Viticulture in California ), where it has been approved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives since 2001 . Together with stocks in Portugal and on the island of Madeira, the global vine stocks are likely to be around 7,500 hectares.

The Ligurian grape variety Pigato is a mutation of Vermentino. Another relationship is probably to the Favorita vine from Piedmont .

A possible connection to the variety Rollo, which is native to Liguria, is unclear. There is also disagreement as to whether the red grape variety grown under the name Vermentino nero in the Tuscan coastal regions is a variant of Vermentino.
