Maremma Toscana
Many different wines from the wine-growing area in the south of the Tuscany region in Italy are offered under the name Maremma Toscana DOC . From 1995 to 2011, the wines from the Maremma were traded with the IGT rating. Since September 30, 2011, the wines have had a “controlled designation of origin ” ( Denominazione di origine controllata - DOC), which was last updated on March 7, 2014.
Cultivation
The DOC Maremma Toscana covers the entire area of the province of Grosseto .
In 2016, 92,461 hl of DOC wine were produced from 1,150 hectares of vineyards.

A total of 39 different wine types are defined for the DOC Maremma Toscana:
Blending wines
- Maremma Toscana bianco (also as Maremma Toscana Spumante , Passito bianco and Vendemmia tardiva ): The grape varieties Trebbiano Toscano and Vermentino , alone or in combination, are required to be at least 40%. Approved grapes of other, non-aromatic white grape varieties may be used up to a maximum of 60%.
- Maremma Toscana rosso (also called Maremma Toscana Passito rosso and Novello ): Sangiovese must be used at least 40%, up to a maximum of 60% other approved red, non-aromatic grapes are allowed.
- Maremma Toscana rosato: Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo are prescribed , alone or in combination, with at least 40%. Other approved red, non-aromatic grape varieties are possible up to a maximum of 60%.
- Maremma Toscana Vin Santo : Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia can be used alone or in combination up to 100%. Other permitted white, non-aromatic grape varieties are permitted up to a maximum of 60%.
Single-variety wines
The use of at least 85% of the main grape variety is prescribed for white and red single-variety wines. Approved grapes from other, non-aromatic grape varieties of the same color may be used up to a maximum of 15%.

Maremma Toscana Ansonica and Vermentino are also possible as sparkling wines.
Maremma Toscana Ansonica, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Trebbiano, Vermentino and Viognier are also defined as Vendemmia tardiva. These must consist of at least 85% of the named grape varieties, up to a maximum of 15% permitted grapes of other, non-aromatic grape varieties of the same color.

Passito
The white types Maremma Toscana Ansonica , Chardonnay , Sauvignon and Vermentino and the red types Maremma Toscana Cabernet, Cabernet Sauvignon , Ciliegiolo and Sangiovese are also approved as Passito . At least 85% of the named grape varieties must be included, up to a maximum of 15% permitted grapes of other, non-aromatic grape varieties of the same color.
Winemaking
Maremma Toscana rosso Novello
Maremma Toscana rosso, which is bottled by December 31st of the year of the grape harvest, may be called Novello as long as at least 40% of the wine is made with carbonic acid maceration.
Maremma Toscana Passito
Maremma Toscana Passito, also with naming the grape variety, must achieve an alcohol content of at least 15.50% by volume through appropriate drying of the grapes. This wine may not be sold before September 30th of the following year after the grape harvest and after a minimum of six months' storage in barrel and / or bottle.
Maremma Toscana Vendemmia tardiva
For Maremma Toscana Vendemmia tardiva, also with naming the grape variety, the grapes must be partially or completely dried on the plant. The wine may not be sold before June 30th of the following year after the grape harvest and after being stored in barrel and / or bottle for at least three months.
Maremma Toscana Vin Santo
After appropriate drying, the grapes must have a sugar content of at least 26% before being pressed. Winemaking, storage and aging must take place in wooden containers (barrels) with a capacity of no more than 500 liters. Vin Santo cannot be bottled before March 1st of the third year after the grape harvest.
