List of grape varieties |
Ciliegiolo is a red grape variety that is common in the Italian wine-growing regions of Abruzzo , Basilicata , Emilia-Romagna , Tuscany , Latium , Umbria , Liguria and Marche .
The wines from Ciliegiolo are usually strong, have a high alcohol, but low acid content. In terms of taste, cherry notes (Ciliegia = Italian for cherry ) are predominant. The stock has long been in decline; it currently occupies around 5,000 hectares of planted vineyards.
The variety makes excellent wines and is often blended with Sangiovese . It is approved for the DOCG wines Chianti and Torgiano Rosso Riserva and in the DOC regions Parrina , Colline Lucchesi , Maremma Toscana , Val di Cornia (all Tuscany) as well as Golfo del Tigullio-Portofino and Colli di Luni . It is also used as a table grape .
The large, elongated leaves are three to five lobed. The berries have a very thick skin, are round and medium-sized, and are black-purple in color. It is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ), has hermaphrodite flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
José Vouillamoz , a biologist from Switzerland, proved that the Sangiovese grape variety was created from a spontaneous crossing of the Ciliegiolo x Calabre Montenuovo varieties .
