Montecucco is a wine-growing region in the Maremma south of Montalcino (southern Tuscany , Italy ). Since July 30, 1998, the area has enjoyed the status of a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC for short), which was last updated on March 7, 2014.

Cultivation

Approved vineyards are in the municipalities of Cinigiano (with the eponymous district Monte Cucco), Civitella Paganico , Campagnatico , Castel del Piano , Arcidosso , Roccalbegna and Seggiano . All municipalities are in the province of Grosseto .

The DOCG wine Montecucco Sangiovese is produced in the same area . (DOCG stands for "controlled and guaranteed origin".)

The types of wine

Montecucco Bianco DOC

The Bianco is made from Trebbiano Toscano (60–100%) and other permitted white varieties (up to 40%). The straw yellow wine has a minimum alcohol content of 11.5 percent by volume .

Montecucco Vermentino DOC

The pure white Vermentino wine type must be made from at least 85% of the Vermentino variety, the remaining 15% can be approved varieties of the same color. The straw yellow wine has a minimum alcohol content of 11.5 percent by volume.

Montecucco Rosso DOC

The Rosso is made from Sangiovese (60–100%) and other approved red varieties (up to 40%). The ruby ​​red wine has a minimum alcohol content of 12.0 percent by volume. As a riserva , the alcohol content must be at least 12.5 percent by volume and the wine must mature for at least 24 months at the winemaker, 18 months of which in wooden barrels and six months in the bottle.

Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG

The single varietal red wine type Sangiovese must be made from at least 90% of the Sangiovese variety, the remaining 10% can be approved varieties of the same color. The ruby ​​red wine has a minimum alcohol content of 13.0 percent by volume. As a riserva , the alcohol content must be at least 13.5 percent by volume and the wine must mature for at least 30 months at the winemaker, 24 months of which in wooden barrels and six months in the bottle.

The Italian Ministry of Agriculture awarded the Montecucco Sangiovese the DOCG award on April 21, 2011 .
