The Palio of Castel del Piano

Similar to Siena (and other places), a Palio is held annually in Castel del Piano , which is run with horses in the Piazza Garibaldi. The four contrades (districts) of the historic center, namely Borgo , Monumento , Poggio and Storte , compete against each other. Before the respective race (as in Siena) there is also a corteo storico (historical parade).

Origins of the Palios of Castel del Piano

The first horse race took place on September 9, 1402, during the Fiera di Merci e Bestiame , when the municipality was under the control of the Republic of Siena. From 1431 until the abandonment of this tradition in the Middle Ages, the Palio of Maria Santissima delle Grazie took place on September 8th, in honor of the namesake, through which, according to legend, 4 soldiers from Castel del Piano presented on September 8th 1430 through an apparition of Mary were saved from death.

Revival of the Palios in 1771

By resolution of a delegation on July 14, 1765, the Palio was revived. The first race race took place on July 7, 1771 under new rules. Districts outside the historic city walls were also allowed to participate. So this race was won by the Montenero district. This form of the palio was retained until the beginning of the 20th century . After the First World War , horse races continued on Corso Garibaldi, but without the participation of the contrades.

Today's Palio

In 1967, the terms of participation for the Palio of Castel del Piano were changed again by a resolution of the city council. Accordingly, since 1968 only the four contrades of the historic old town ( Borgo , Monumento , Poggio and Storte ) have been competing against each other. The first Palio under new rules was won on September 9, 1968 by the Contrade Monumento with the rider (Fantino) Pieraccini (called Bubbolino) on the horse Leda. The last run Palio (2009) won the Contrade Borgo with G.Mureddu (called Filuferru) with the horse Iolao.
