Life

Guidoriccio was born the son of Niccolò da Fogliano in Fogliano (today a district in the south of Reggio nell'Emilia ). His brothers were Tommaso, Giberto, Matteo, Giovanni Riccio and Guglielino.

He is mentioned for the first time as a military leader in 1324. From 1327 he was commissioned by the Republic of Siena , where he stayed for six years. During this time the successful siege of Montemassi falls , which was later recorded in the painting Guidoriccio da Fogliano all'assedio di Montemassi . This was followed by other successful campaigns in the Aldobrandeschi area , for example in Arcidosso , Castel del Piano , Santa Fiora and Scansano . One of his last successful battles during his first period of service in Siena was the capture of the places protected by Pisa Giuncarico (now the municipality of Gavorrano ) and Massa Marittima in 1332. A year later there were conflicts with the government of Siena, which is why Guidoriccio was withdrawn from the service Sienas resigned and joined John of Bohemia . In 1335 he had to accept the takeover of his hometown by the Gonzaga family and fled to the Scaliger family in Verona . On January 5, 1337, he was appointed Podestà of Padua and remained in office until he was captured by Venice in August 1338. After his release in 1339, he made peace with the Gonzaga. In 1343 he fought at the side of Werner von Urslingen (also called Guarnieri d'Urslingen or Duca Guarnieri ) in Bologna , Modena and Correggio and was also documented again in Padua.

In 1351 he was summoned to Siena as a war leader, where he died on June 16, 1352. He was buried on June 25, 1352 in the Basilica di San Domenico .

The painting Guidoriccio da Fogliano by Simone Martini in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena

Guidoriccio da Fogliano achieved greater fame through the fresco Guidoriccio da Fogliano all'assedio di Montemassi (Guidoriccio da Fogliano during the Siege of Montemassi) by Simone Martini in the Sala del Mappamondo of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, which is located above the door to the Sala della Pace ( Sala dei Nove) and measures 968 × 340 cm. Guidoriccio da Fogliano is shown in the center, the castle on the left shows Montemassi, the castle on the half-right probably the district of Sassofortino (Roccastrada). The painting was probably created around 1330 (the website of the city of Siena speaks of 1328), although there was a discussion about the origin and dating of the painting in the 1970s and 1980s. Some arguments were found in favor of a painting from the (early) 15th century.
