history

The church of San Michele Arcangelo in the town center

The castle Castello di Sassoforte was first in 1076 in a document of the Aldobrandeschi as Saxoforte mentioned when Ildebrando Aldobrandeschi some of his possessions to the Church of Montemassi bequeathed. The Borgo (lower town) was first mentioned in the 12th century. The Aldobrandeschi then gave their lands as a fiefdom to the local lords Uguccione da Sassoforte degli Ardengheschi , which was confirmed in 1221 by Frederick II . The break between the Aldobrandeschi and the Ardengheschi followed a short time later for political reasons, when the Ardengheschi in the conflict between the Ghibellines and Guelphs submitted to the Ghibelline Siena in 1254 and thus stood in contrast to the papal-minded Aldobrandeschi. Due to this fact, the place escaped the conflict in the run-up to the Battle of Montaperti and, unlike Montemassi, was spared from the fighting, but already in 1270 differences with Siena and the neighboring bar town Roccatederighi , which were now under Guelphic governments. In addition, relations with the neighboring town of Torniella (also today the municipality of Roccastrada) were also disrupted under the rule of the Pannocchieschi , which led to an intervention by Siena. In 1328 the place (like Montemassi) was besieged and taken by Guidoriccio da Fogliano . After the local lords Ghinozzo e Longarello del fu Pepo da Sassoforte were brought to Santa Fiora by the Aldobrandeschi , Siena acquired the previously conquered place from the Aldobrandeschi on February 27, 1330 for a sum of 5500 Fiorini and tore down the fortification walls to advance the Republic further use of the castle to protect against them. The almost abandoned castle was reactivated by the Salimbeni in 1368 , but in 1404 Pietro di Niccolò dei Salimbeni sold Fiorini back to Siena for 2000, as the Salimbeni in Siena had political difficulties and later had to leave the city of Siena (in the 1420s) . The majority of the population then settled in the Borgo Sassofortino below. After the defeat of the Senese Republic in 1555 against the Republic of Florence, the place (like Siena) also fell to the Duchy of Tuscany . After the unification of Italy in 1861, the place became part of the municipality of Roccastrada.
