Paganico Church

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Paganico

The church in the Paganico district, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, was built in the 14th century . It has rare frescoes by Biagio di Goro Ghezzi . These frescoes were painted over Byzantine frescoes that can still be seen in some places.

Frescoes

The frescoes deal with different themes:

The crucifix

The church's wooden crucifix has recently been restored. It was probably made by a 15th century carpenter . A legend is associated with this crucifix, of which there are two versions. Legend has it that hunters from Civitella found the cross in a forest. They wanted to leave it in place until evening and then bring it to their church. When they came back in the evening to fetch the cross, it was gone. The cross was brought to the church of Paganico. This was done by a second group of hunters who decided to abandon their hunt. From here on there are two versions of the legend. One says that the hunters of Civitella took the crucifix after some quarrels and brought it to their church. However, when they came to church in the morning, it was nowhere to be found. It has miraculously returned to the Church of Paganico. The second version says that after the quarrels were over, they decided to put the matter in God's hands. They put the crucifix on a cart that was tied to two oxen. The oxen were free to move, and after the animals wandered aimlessly for a long time, they came to a stop in front of the church of Paganico. From then on the crucifix was in the church of Paganico.
