Isola del Giglio ( German island Giglio ) is a municipality in the province of Grosseto in the Tuscany region in Italy . The municipality consists of the two inhabited islands Giglio and Giannutri as well as some small rocky islands (including Isola della Cappa ).

Most of the almost 1500 inhabitants live in the three villages of Porto , Castello and Campese on the island of Giglio. Only 27 people live on Giannutri (2011).

Giglio received sad international attention in January 2012 when the cruise ship Costa Concordia ran aground off the island.

Islands

Giglio is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Elba and about 18 kilometers west of the Monte Argentario peninsula . The island is mostly mountainous, its highest peak, the Poggio della Pagana, reaches 496 m. ü. M. The island consists almost entirely of granite with the exception of Franco Promontorios in the northwest of the island, which is made of limestone. The coast is mostly rocky and almost 28 kilometers long. The four largest beaches are Campese on the west coast and Arenella, Cannelle and Caldane on the east coast.

The crescent-shaped island of Giannutri is 14 kilometers south of Monte Argentario and around 16 kilometers southeast of Giglio island. It is over three kilometers long and a maximum of 500 meters wide. The bay-rich island is relatively flat, its highest point is 88 meters high.
