Magliano in Toscana is an Italian municipality with 3403 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Grosseto in the Tuscany region .
geography
The community extends over around 250 km². It is located about 28 km southeast of the provincial capital Grosseto and 130 km south of the regional capital Florence in the wine-growing region of Morellino di Scansano . The place lies on the river Albegna and in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone D, 1 699 GG.
The districts ( frazioni ) include Montiano (260 meters in altitude, approx. 470 inhabitants) and Pereta (283 m, approx. 180 inhabitants). The main town itself has about 800 inhabitants.
The neighboring municipalities are Grosseto , Manciano , Orbetello and Scansano .
history
Originated in the Middle Ages , the place was under the control of the Aldobrandeschi and from 1274 the place was under the Count of Santa Fiora . In the 14th century the Republic of Siena took control of the place and gave it as a fief to Spinello di Spinello Tolomei. After the defeat of the Senese Republic in 1555 against the Republic of Florence , the place fell to the Duchy of Tuscany . In 1882 the lead plate of Magliano was found during excavations in the municipality .
Attractions
- Palazzo del Podestà , also Palazzo dei Priori, town hall built in 1425.
- Palazzo di Checco il Bello , building from the 14th century and former seat of the Monaldeschi family from Orvieto .
- Pieve di San Martino , Pieve in the center, which was first mentioned in the 13th century. It is considered the oldest church in the area and contains frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries.
- Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista , church in the town center, which was first documented in 1273. The facade dates from 1471. Contains a large number of paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1744 the church was restored.
- Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata , also called Madonna delle Grazie , church just outside the town center, which was previously dedicated to the Madonna del Latte . Was expanded in the 14th century. The church first belonged to the Servites , then to the Augustinian order and the Camaldolese . In 1800 the abandoned church was restored on the initiative of Felice Vivarelli. The main altar contains the panel painting Madonna che allatta il Bambino , a late work by Neroccio di Bartholomeo di Benedetto de 'Landi .
- Monastero di San Bruzio , ruined monastery in the area just south of the city walls. Previously dedicated to San Tiburcio , it was built by the Camaldolese between the 11th and 12th centuries.
- Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista , church in the district of Montiano, contains a fresco from the 15th century (Visitazione).
- Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista , church in the district of Pereta, contains the works Madonna col Bambino e Santi by Alessandro Casolani or Vincenzo Rustici and Madonna col Bambino che porge il Rosario a San Domenico ea Santa Caterina da Siena by Astolfo Petrazzi .
- Pieve di Santa Maria , Pieve in the district of Pereta from the 15th century.
- Coastal defense towers in the Parco Regionale della Maremma (Monti dell'Uccellina):
- Torre Bassa , also called Torre Nuova , was documented in the 12th century in the possession of the Aldobrandeschi.
- Torre della Bella Marsilia
- Torre di Cala di Forno was built in 1561 on the will of Cosimo I de 'Medici over an older defensive structure.
