Culture and sights

building

  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista , Pieve in the upper town center, which was built in the 13th century and which was elevated to a Prepositura church ( parish church ) in the 18th century . The campanile originally belonged to the city walls as a defense tower. In the church you can find the work Madonna con il Bambino by Guido di Graziano from the late 13th century. The Storie della Vergine fresco circle by Cristoforo di Bindoccio and Meo di Pero (1393) comes from the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie .
  • Chiesa di Santa Maria della Misericordia , already mentioned in 1188 church in the town center.
  • Chiesa di Sant'Antonio abate , former church in the town center from the 13th century, was converted into a theater in 1883 .
  • Rocca aldobrandesca , Aldobrandeschi castle in the town center, built in the 10th century.
  • Colonne della Sabatina , ruins of the former castle Castello della Sabatina near the local border with Scansano. The castle was built in the 13th century under the Abbazia San Galgano .

Palio dei Ciuchi

Since 1957, a Palio in honor of Mary ( Santissima Madonna delle Grazie ) has been held in Campagnatico on the Sunday after September 8th ( Mary's birth ) . The four districts Contrada Castello, Rione Centro, Rione Pieve and Rione Santa Maria compete in the 'Palio dei Ciuchi'. This equestrian competition for a painted flag (similar to that in Siena ) is held on donkeys in Campagnatico, while horses are ridden in Siena. The course leads along Via Roma, the town hall and ends at the hill that leads to the schools. The rules provide for two races. In the first all four contrades take part, in the final only the two winners of the first race face each other.
